GREAT IDEAS! Worth the money! Buy this book for general health or for beautiful, healthy hair!

This book is FULL of interesting information, and it motivates you to get going on so many things you have been meaning to do for your health anyway. It is inspiring because so many of her examples show that you DO have power to change your thinning hair or slow growing hair into thick, fast growing hair. I have already "fixed" my hair in the past two years doing most of these things, but I keep getting more information anyway, just in case there is another idea out there. I have also "fixed" my rotator cuff tears, and my back injury though my doctors thought I needed surgery. I never give up without a serious try! I love books that give people the information they need to really make a difference in how they look and feel. It was so interesting that I actually stayed up too late because I couldn't put it down!

The Hair I've Always Dreamed Of!

My hair was my ruin for most of my life. I knew that I had "artificial" disabilities when it came to growing a beautiful head of hair, but I just didn't know how to overcome what had beset my own mane.

Before I started doing the procedures as laid out in Jeanne's book, I had been wearing extensions for about a year. My hair had gotten so brittle and thin I had to wear them in order to wear my hair down.

I started the procedures and in about 2 months, my hair was in so much better condition that I was able to take the extensions out. The hair next to my scalp became the thickest in years. In the first 3-4 months I had a round of new hair growth long enough where it blended in to the rest of my hair. With these procedures, hair growth gains momentum. I have grown so much new hair in the span of only 6 months--it's quite incredible. I now wear my hair down without extensions and it is beautiful and silky.

Now the only attention I put on my hair is to glance at it in the mirror every so often and be amazed that it's my hair...it's so pretty! My hair is so lustrous and shiny...I get so many comments on it now. People say I have beautiful hair! I had two people tell me that my hair was absolutely stunning! Can you believe it? Me, the girl who always felt like the ugliest woman in the room because of my horrible hair! I have the best hair I've ever had...and it continues to get better every month! It's the hair I've always dreamed of...but never had until I started doing Jeanne's techniques. The information in The Modern Rapunzel helped me make a dream come true. Every woman needs this book...really!

I just loved this book. I initially read it to find out how to achieve beautiful, thick hair and found amazingly easy and doable secrets from which I've had great results. The information is straightforward and simple. In addition, it's a great read. Jeanne Powers is funny and inspiring and this book offers so much more than I had imagined. Though it starts being all about a woman's crowning glory it reveals a plethora of knowledge and information one needs to live a happier, more successful and fulfilling life. The Modern Rapunzel is brimming with "ah-ha" moments and I recommend it highly.

About the Author
Annette Lareau is the Stanley I. Sheerr Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She is faculty member in the Department of Sociology with a secondary appointment in the Graduate School of Education. Lareau is the author of Home Advantage: Social Class and Parental Intervention in Elementary Education (1989; second edition, 2000), and coeditor of Social Class: How Does it Work? A Must-Read for Parents and Educators

I've assigned Lareau's original work for several years in a lower-level Race, Class and Gender Sociology course taught for elementary education majors. This is THE book students remember from the course and the one that provides them with the perspective they need to deal with educational issues connected to social class. I highly recommend this second edition as it addresses the ultimate question of what happened to the children and how their life chances varied according to social standing. Excellent read for anyone interested in parental involvement, student achievement, and the mechanisms which we use to navigate the social institution of education with varying degrees of success.

A fabulous update to the original gem

Annette Lareau updates her 2006 book with extra chapters that follow her subjects into adulthood and describe methodological strengths and issues. The core of the book is the same, and retains its finding. The last few chapters explore late teens for the students. The findings that concerted cultivation exists in the middle class continue through the college application process, with middle class teens receiving help from family and working class teens trying to get help from schools and other institutions. Chapter 14 is a rare and very honest glimpse into how research subjects feel about the research being done about them. Long story short: most do not like it. Dr. Lareau includes quotes and letters describing this, which should serve as a point-to think for student ethnographers. Chapter 15 mathematically models class and time use data from the PSID.

Often second edition of books are different from the first edition in very minor ways. That is not true of this edition. I highly recommend it.

Unequal opportunities means inherited inequality

Most Americans see individual effort as the key to success, with fewer than one in five seeing class or race as very important in getting ahead in life. The reality is that social class is a more important determinant of a person's success in life than it used to be due to two powerful trends: Growing economic inequality that has created a wider gulf between rich and poor, and less mobility between classes. The fact is the USA has both less social mobility and wider economic inequality than any of the other rich democracies in Canada, Australia, Japan and western Europe.

With more sluggish mobility than in the past, class has become more hereditary than it once was. The gap in spending per child is growing between rich and poor Americans, from 5 to 1 in 1972 to 9 to 1 in 2007. Just 17 percent of kids raised in the bottom fifth of the income distribution will make it to the top two-fifths by age 40.

It's no wonder then that class differences are so powerful in shaping a child's life experience, more important in child raising than racial differences, according to Annette Lareau, a sociology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who won awards for the first edition of this book in 2002.

Lareau's research reveals the basic class differences in approach to raising children. Middle-class parents have their children in organized activities and engage in a process of "concerted cultivation." By contrast, working-class and poor parents don't engage their children in concerted cultivation, instead allowing development through "natural growth."

Poor parents face economic challenges just putting food on the table and getting medical care. They lack the resources and energy to put their kids in as many organized activities. Children are left with more unstructured time, which is spent in front of a TV or playing with child relatives and friends, with much less direct adult supervision than in the middle-class organized activities.

Most of the book is devoted to in-depth studies of individual middle-class and working class students. Those studies reveal differences in how parents nurture their children and why middle-class children learn skills essential for later success that their poorer counterparts don't learn.

Middle-class mothers, for example, tend to be interventionist at school or other institutional settings, intervening in situations. "By teaching their children how to get organizations to meet their individualized needs, middle-class mothers pass along skills that have the potential to be extremely valuable to their children in adulthood. These are class-based advantages." Middle-class parents tend to have a better understanding of how institutions work and therefore of how to effectively influence them.

Working class mothers tend to be more passive and deferential when it comes to school. They tend to be more respectful of educators' professional expertise than are their middle-class counterparts. These parents feel they lack the vocabulary to deal assertively with educational and medical professionals.

Lareau did a follow up a decade later with the children in her study (who were ten at the time of the original study) and again 15 years later. She found that social class continued to matter in their lives, affecting how much education they obtained and their options in the world of work. As the children in the study matured, income inequality widened, with all but one of the middle-class subjects becoming professionals, compared to none of the working-class and poor subjects.

Though all of the parents in the study loved their children and wanted the best for them, the fact is that none of the working-class/poor subjects achieved a college degree. By age 10, the die was cast, making it likely that children would end up in situations similar to those of their parents. "It is not impossible for individuals to significantly change their life position, but it is not common."

Lareau concludes that class-related differences in child rearing lead to the "transmission of differential advantages to children." Those differential advantages belie the common American belief that there is equal opportunity for those with hard work and talent to succeed, and that our success or lack thereof is an individual responsibility. It's tempting for those who aren't poor to blame those who are for their plight. Looking at inequality from a class perspective, however, aids understanding about how inequality is inherited. Americans tend to downplay or not notice class-based advantages they receive.

Our meritocratic culture implies a competition with fair play and deserved outcomes. The working class works hard, but opportunities for advancement are nonetheless limited. The system is not neutral or fair: it does not give all children equal opportunities. "The life paths we pursue are neither equal nor freely chosen."

The transmission of privilege, however, is `misrecognized." Individuals tend to see social class as earned. In other words, status and privilege are perceived as earned by talent, intelligence and effort. Lareau and other sociologists see that social position is not the result of personal attributes such as effort or intelligence, but more the result of socialization that transmits social skills, social networks, and resources.

"The social position of one's family or origin has profound implications for life experiences and life outcomes. But the inequality our system creates and sustains is invisible and thus unrecognized. We would be a better country if we could enlarge our truncated vocabulary about the importance of social class, for only then might we acknowledge the class divisions among us." ###

Dr. Davidovits earned his doctorate, masters, and undergraduate degrees from Columbia University. Prior to his appointment at Boston College, he was a faculty member at Yale University. PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, by Professor Paul Davidovits, is an expository masterpiece of admirable didactic value, which has gained additional attractiveness through the myriad of improvements made in the third edition. Reading PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, Third Edition,I have been thoroughly impressed by Professor Davidovits scholarly depth and persuasive sincerity. Moreover, his uncanny ability to communicate difficult concepts in surprisingly accessible and yet technically accurate language is certainly rare. The book reviewed here can be profitably employed as a faithful companion to the regular text adopted by any instructor, for a one-year course of general physics to biology and premed students.

About the Author

George Woodbury earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of California—Santa Barbara in 1990 and his master’s degree in mathematics from California State University—Northridge in 1994. He currently teaches at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA, just outside of Fresno. He has been honored as an instructor by both his students and his colleagues. Aside from teaching and writing, George served as the department chair of the math/engineering division from 1999 through 2004. He is the author of a series of algebra textbooks for Pearson Education, and has been a user of MyMathLab since inception, continually coming up with creative ways to integrate his teaching methods with technology. I had always thought of reading and knowing the Mahabharata but somehow I just couldn't sit down and go through the traditional one. That is when I stumbled upon JAYA. And grateful as I am, this book is for all those who just want to know that little something about our culture and beliefs. The work put in by the author in gathering the facts will leave you absolutely stunned and once you are done with it you would feel like acting like an expert on hindu Mythology.....!!! This has to be one of the best books on Mahabharat. The best part of book is it is impartial and factual. Also every chapter end with few bullet points, trying to connect events and customs in story, with probable prevailing customers in reality around that period. Devdutt Pattanaik is a medical doctor by education, a leadership consultant by profession, and a mythologist by passion. He has written and lectured extensilvey on the nature of sacred stories, symbols and rituals and their relevance in modern times. His books include The Book of Ram, Myth=Mithya: A Handbook of Hindu Mythology and The Pregnant King and The Book of Kali is based on his talks.

Fascinating, different, enlightening retelling of India's greatest epic

Jaya is a fascinating retelling of the Mahabharata, the great Indian epic, by author Devdutt Patanaik. While the story of the Mahabharata has been told and retold thousands of times over thousands of years, the story never gets old, nor does its relevance lose relevance. Each honest retelling adds something to our knowledge of this great epic, and each time a reader reads a new retelling, he learns something new about this great epic, and about life itself.

This book is a little different from other retellings because of several reasons

Firstly, it includes tales from regional versions of the Mahabharata, going to places out of India like Indonesia where the Mahabharata is part of the folklore. This helps you become aware of how pervasive this epic is in India and elsewhere. I did not know there is a temple where Duryodhana is worshiped.

Second, the organization of the book itself is interesting. It is divided into 18 chapters, and a total of 108 sections. 108, you see, has immense significance in Hinduism. 108 names of Vishnu, 108 beads in a rosary, and so on.

Third, there are comments sprinkled all over that point us, the reader, to specific aspects of the epic, whether they pertain to the status of women in ancient India, or the acceptance of transgenders, or the unintended consequences of karma - a central tenet of the Gita, and much more.

Fourthly, the book takes a critical look at the some of the central characters in the epic - Arjun, Drona, Bheeshma, and others. We often forget that Drona was a brahmin who became a warrior. Was it his dharma to have done so? Was he motivated by a sense of revenge? Of taking revenge on his once childhood friend, Drupada? What about Bheeshma? He took a vow of celibacy, yet ended up rearing the children of Satyavati, and their sons, and their sons. In acting has they did, each of these characters were doing as they thought their dharma was. Even the rascal Jayadratha - who, along with Duryodhana, believed in "matsya nyaya" - the rule of the fish, as in the larger fish eat the smaller fish. There are observations galore, interspersed after sections and chapters that give the reader occasion to pause and reflect.

Finally, I believe this book is best read if you are already somewhat familiar with the epic. If not, it may be worthwhile to get your hands on a shortened version of the epic and then jump into this book. There is no shortage of books on the Mahabharata. The most common and popular ones are the ones by C Rajagopalachari (Mahabharata), for decades the de-facto starter edition for millions of Indians. This, along with the one by RK Narayan (The Mahabharata: A Shortened Modern Prose Version of the Indian Epic), are the simplest, but also very sanitized, versions of the epic.

Finally, finally, note that there are some sections in the book that are slightly graphic in nature, and not suitable for reading by young readers. The author notes as much in the introduction.

For those wanting to dive into a multi-year study of the epic, there is the critical edition. One by KM Ganguly (The Mahabharata - a trifle 4900 pages), and a more recent one by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, also known as the Poona edition (The Mahabharata, for the First Time Critically Edited (POONA EDITION: CRITICAL EDITION SET OF 30 LARGE VOLUMES, WITH THE PRATIKA-INDEX)).

This book is a rewarding experience and helps you see the epic in a new light.

An analytical look at the Epic

In my teens in India, I used to be fascinated by the retelling of the Mahabharata by Rajaji in Tamil. I read it repeatedly over the years and was well conversant with the myths, the war and its aftermath. One thing that always stood out as an anamoly was the repeated conduct of 'adharmic' actions by the Pandavas during the war and Krishna's collusion in most of them. However, Rajaji, being a devotee of Krishna himself, always glossed over these acts of adharma and presented mostly a sanitised picture of the Pandavas as the good guys, the Kauravas as the bad guys and the role of Krishna as beyond evaluation because he was God himself on Earth. Rajaji also was guilty of presenting an incomplete picture of the epic in some ways. For example, he writes that the Pandavas, during their exile in the forest, were implored by the King of Animals to stop decimating the deer population in their search for food. Yudhishtra agrees and moves away from the forest and Rajaji heralds this as an indication of the environmental concern of our ancestors. But he completely avoids mentioning the cruelty of the Pandavas in burning down the Khandavaprastha forest to build the city of Indraprastha, killing all the animals, reptiles, trees and insects wantonly.

Hence, for me, this book by Devdutt Pattanaik is a welcome addition to the retelling of the Mahabharata. He takes a more critical and objective look at the epic and speculates on the motives of the various players in the epic without being constrained by false religious devotion and dogma. He also brings in alternative versions of the epic from various folk traditions in Tamilnadu, Orissa, Rajasthan and Indonesia. I found this book an educational and refreshing read.

The story is too well known to be recounted here. Instead, I shall touch upon some of the other interesting aspects of the epic that the author writes about.

1. The author quotes Indian psychoanalysts of the Freudian school to suggest that Indian men possibly suffer from the 'Yayati complex' rather than the 'Oedipus complex'. In the Greek view, dominated by the Oedipus complex, it is the next generation which inherits society, while in the Indian world-view, dominated by the Yayati complex, it is the older generation which always dominates society, explaining the stranglehold of tradition over modernity in Indian society. I guess all Indians can relate to this very well from personal experience!

2. This retelling of the epic also brings the Pandavas and Bhishma down to earth instead of blindly keeping them on a pedestal of perfection. The author suggests that Arjuna was very insecure about his position as the best archer and that the Pandavas were mostly insecure and unsure of their identity till their marriage to Draupadi. It was the marriage to the daughter of the King of Panchala which gave them a sense of royal identity and power. Most narrations of the epic do not suggest such a prime role for Draupadi. Elsewhere, it is also shown that the Pandavas did argue and bicker among themselves over Yudhishtra's penchant for continuing to play the game of dice and losing everything in the process. Bhishma is also shown to be not so saintly but prone to pride and arrogance in the way he kidnapped Amba, Ambika and Ambalika and ruining Amba's life in the process. The author lists ten major acts of 'adharma' during the war and shows that eight belonged to the Pandavas (and Krishna) while only two were committed by the Kauravas.

3.Dating the Epic: Indians often like to date the Mahabharata as far back in time as possible because we seem to think that something must be great just because it is very old. Here, the author quotes B.N. Narahari Achar of the Dept of Physics, Memphis Univ, USA in dating the epic using the Planetarium software. Based on astronimical data exactly as given in the epic - that two eclipses separated by 13 days took place around the war, that of a lunar eclipse and then a solar eclipse with Saturn at Rohini and Jupiter at Revathi - the Great war must have started on 22 Nov 3067 BCE. The author also suggests that the epic was written over many centuries, starting with the Vedic times around 2000 BCE all the way to 300 CE when the Bhagvad Gita was possibly added. The proof he gives is as follows: 'The Gods invoked by Kunti and Madri to beget children were Vedic Gods like Yama, Vayu and Indra rather than Shiva or Vishnu or Brahma. The notion of an all-powerful God is a later development in Hindu thought. This indicates that the epic first took shape in Vedic times which were dominated by beliefs in elemental spirits.

There are many more commentaries by the author on other aspects of the Epic which make this book a very worthwhile read. The illustrations are not bad either. Even non-Indians can get a good understanding of the epic through this book though the number of characters may simply overwhelm one and all.

A great book for the beginner and practicing

I'm a practicing Hindu and I was frankly impressed with the book. The book is not a retelling, but provides the wisdom behind the story. I have heard the stories before, but never the wisdom. For that alone, I give it 5 stars. It gives a peek into the complicated Indian mind, where there is no "right" and "wrong", and everything is subjective. There is no victory or defeat, everything lies in the mind. The other greatest impact this book had on me is it forced me to think deeply about the karmic law, and how can I come out of it. It does not try to rationalize or de-rationalize the story, it just tells the story as it is. He gives his interpretations in a separate box, enabling easy separation of the author's point of view and the actual story. Now after reading this book I want to read other books he has authored to provide me the wisdom behind Hindu epics.
