Great book.

Great book showing that kids with autism have potential to grow and learn new skills (as well preventing life-long institutionalization). It also points out how Lovaas and colleagues conducted a study in 1987 at UCLA (that was later endorsed by the Surgeon General in 1999) showing 47% of the children with autism obtained a "learning" recovery and were successfully mainstreamed in regular education classrooms. A follow-up study in 1993 showed that 42% 'fully' recovered from the autism spectrum and were indistinguishable from their peers showing typical social and adaptive skills by early adolescence. Every proven treatment - from Risperdal (updated in the 1997 revision manual) to Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) - is in this book. A VERY reliable book on evidence-based intervention which, to this day, remains the 'gold-standard' for ABA training in the treatment of autism. It also points out the need for parents to avoid temptations of becoming involved in non-validated treatments, i.e., Son-Rise (referred to as "Option" therapy in this book, which is nothing more than a marketing scam and the founders brainwash everyone who trains there) and Holding Therapy (developed based on the unproven "Refrigerator Mother" theory once held by the mental health community before 1964).

What's interesting about all of this is: I was Dr. Bobby Newman's first client to ever receive a 40-hour per week, ABA program in a home setting and I didn't speak or respond to my name until I was 4 1/2 years old. Catherine Maurice, also a founding member of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and whose kids fully recovered from the autism spectrum (as outlined in her famous 1993 book "Let Me Hear Your Voice: A Family's Triumph Over Autism" featuring forwards by Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas (founder of Discrete Trial Teaching or DTT) and Dr. Bernie Rimland (whose book in 1964 changed the mental health community's perspective on autism and co-founded the Autism Society of America with Dr. Lovaas)), happened to have hired Dr. Newman to be the president of an organization she founded in Great Neck, New York called the Association for Science in Autism Treatment for 3 years. (Dr. Newman was also the former president of the New York State Association for Behavior Analysis (NYSABA) and his wife, Dr. Dana Reinecke, is currently the president elect for the NYSABA for 2016).

Easy to use curriculum guide.

There's a lot of material in this book that is great, from treatment planning to how to recruit employees. There are even flow charts for helping to make behavior intervention decisions, and lots of general use data sheets.

What I get most out of it is the lesson planning material, this book is full of examples of targets for each skill. There's a section on beginning, intermediate and advanced curricula, which can be used on their own, or with other curriculum guides, and each entry is provided a program guide with specific targets, and a print out for the program's data taking. I can print it out, when my assessments indicate the program is called for, and hand it to the interventionist so they have the directions, too.

The go to if you're working with kids on the spectrum

This book is a staple of SLPs in every clinic I've worked for. It has great resources and is broken up into well defined sections. The practical portions (which are a majority of the book) really break down the hierarchy of skills and give clear steps for implementing ABA-style interventions. While not necessarily a speech therapy manual, it is a Godsend for approaching the behavior challenges and beginning to pull out those intervention skills in kiddos with ASDs. Well worth the investment.

Well presented work on Hydrogeology

I rated this book 5 stars because Dr. Kasenow does such a great job at explaining concepts and he makes it so easy with all the illustrations in this text to ensure that the reader understands the concepts behind aquifer types, storage, transmissivity, well hydraulics, boundary conditions, step-drawdown analysis, and assumptions used under each model-type.

Great Module

This adventure sets a campaign background, and sets an excellent adventure pace for 3 dungeons, as well as dropping great hints for the DM to set up side adventures during and after the dungeons.

I ran this adventure for a group of 5 players, and it was excellent.

The encounter format is typically 2 pages, with room and encounter description going together, along with monster tactics, in some cases, broken down round by round, explaining when monsters flee, etc.

I'm very satisfied with this product.

Quite possibly one of the greatest starter adventures ever written

I've been running The Shattered Gates of Slaughterguard for three weeks now and I'm very pleased. My players are having a blast too.

I've been DMing games for a long time, both published and self-made campaigns. I've played/run several of the "official" Wizards of the Coast modules as well as a lot of generic adventures intended for D20 use. Hands down, this is the best I've encountered. The good points are as follows:

-Easy to run.

-The information is presented in a concise, lean format that makes finding information a breeze (for example, the overall maps of the dungeon are in one book, while the individual room descriptions are in another. So you can have both open at once for the first 2 dungeons)

-The story is more of a framework as opposed to a specific set of events, allowing you a lot of creativity.

-It's very adaptable. There's a small section that deals with making it fit with just about any game. Including Forgotten Realms and Eberron.

-Comes with lots of handouts for the players as well as a short "players guide" that the players are free to flip through.

The list goes on and on. If you are new to D&D, this is a great place to start. If you are a veteran, this will provide a wonderful starting point for just about any campaign you might have in mind.

Well thought out product

This says 'An adventure for characters 1-6' but it's really much more. You're getting a mini-campaign setting. This has to be one of the better adventure products I've seen from WOTC in a while. Lots of source material inside and outside the dungeons themselves, lots of places a DM can insert his/her own campaign elements. The maps are well laid out. There are lot of things here that could be easily adapted and used outside of this mini-campaign.

Wow! With Balls On Top

I bought The Arrangement on its release day and tonight on Twitter posted: "I'm about to start The Arrangement by Nicolette Hugo #amreading"...
It's now about 2 hours later (2.5 maybe), and here I sit to tell the world what I thought.
Well... my butt has not moved from the couch. I've been absolutely invested in Vincent and Nell and this bloody incredible book.
My knowledge of Dominant/Submissive only extends to a movie called The Secretary with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal watched years ago, plus one book, the name of which I no longer remember but remember I liked.
So this is out of my comfort zone. I saw some excerpts of The Arrangement on various FB and blog interviews and I just knew this author's writing would be a style I'd adore. So I took a chance on a newbie author. What can I say? Sometimes, a reader and writer just click.
Emotion crawled, flew and exploded off the page for me, between Vincent and Nell. It might not work like that for everyone, but that's what it was like for me.
I love Nell's commitment to Vincent. I loved the vulnerability of both characters.
I thought the description and use of Nell's first person POV was just perfect for the story being told.
Congratulations Nicolette Hugo. I thought The Arrangement was brilliant and I highly recommend it. #FanForLife

Frustrating, but had complex characters with great potential

I really felt like this read more like a diary than a novel with how fragmented it was. I found myself constantly saying "show me don't tell me," and the story overall lacked any real emotion between the characters. We are told how she feels, but not shown what made her feel this way. How are we to believe that they fell in love over the course of these six months when we miss out on key relationship building moments? We barely even skim the surface of their relationship. It starts out with Nell about to sign her first contract with Vincent for six months, but then it skips all the way to month six in the first chapter. Unfortunately, that's a huge chunk of their relationship building we don't get to see. Now I'm not saying we need a daily play by play or anything, but it would have been nice to watch the slow build of their relationship instead of just being told that Nell is in love with him after five months.

Given that we don't see much in the way of their relationship actually building, it made the story seem very surface level when the characters are more complex than that. I thought they were both interesting, so I think a dual point of view would have helped make this better. Maybe the lack of connection between the characters was intentional by the author given Vincent's edict that things stick strictly to the agreement, but we as the readers like to hear what isn't being said by both characters with internal dialogue.

"When there is no pleasure for me...when he gives pain just for him...that's when I steal my pleasure from him. I have my own darkness."

Now I'm not saying this book was bad. I was just frustrated a lot of the time, because I felt like I was missing key parts I felt were necessary. Like I said, I liked both characters and the bits we get of their intimate times together were incredibly hot. That breath play scene was...intense and I loved it. It made me want to see more complete scenes with them than the fragmented ones we got. Overall, I'd say that this story has real potential. I wanted it to be longer, but I really wanted it to be from both points of view so we understand more about their relationship. The characters were complex, and they have an intensity in the bedroom that I found intriguing. I'm definitely going to give Nicolette another try in the future.

Wow loved it

This story is a strong BDSM. It shows the push and pull of a growing relationship. It talks about contracts and how she is learning the process of building trust. My heart is still being pulled and I want to read it again or read more. This book is not everyone's cup of tea, but it shows that there are different sides of the BDSM world and that everyone just wants to be respected for what their kinks are and excepted to try new things. I would read this again as well as other works by this author. Loved it and can't wait to read and review more. A slave to this authors writing.
Overview. (Might have spoilers). Nell is a strong woman raised in a good normal family but lost her dad about 10years ago. She seen how her mom stopped living. So she set goals to be a lawyer and partner and not fall in love until she was set in life. But Vincent offered her a contract to explore the BDSM lifestyle and still have her normal life. But what Nell found was love. She loved the pain and pleasure that Vincent brought her. But Nell could not figure out how to except the two parts of her life and how to fully trust Vincent with her heart. Nell fights and loses in a lot of ways until she finds it in her heart to love and Trust Vincent 100%.

How did you first become interested in typography?

A printer in our neighbourhood gave me a small tabletop platen press and some type when I was 12.

Do you have a favorite typeface? Which one is it and why?

Historically it would be Berthold’s Block, because that was the first one I ever looked at closely and later redrew one of its variants as one of my first excursions into typedesign. But my favourite typeface of the day is the one that works really well for a project, whether it’s designed by myself or by one of my colleagues. It helps that I am friends with a lot of type designers, so using their faces is also very personal.

Your book, Stop Stealing Sheep, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. How has the design world changed over the past 20 years?

Do we have 500 pages and doesn’t everybody know the answer? Seriously, that is too big a question to answer in one paragraph. The good news is that design becomes ever more important as the world grows more complex. Designers are interpreters: we need to translate the world to people by making complex issues and processes visible.

Your book is now available in its 3rd edition. What new information will your readers learn in this edition?

Type is read on screen as well as on paper. We have new technologies and type has always adapted to technology. Choosing the right type hasn’t become any easier, so a few new conditions and rules are explained.

Your book isn’t a tutorial on typeface, but rather an invigorating jaunt filled with history, examples, and opinions. Whom did you write the book for?

The original brief from Adobe back in 1992 was, (in their words, not mine) the "average secretary" who now had type at her fingertips.

Which companies do you feel make the best design and typeface choices?

Those that are aware of their true message, know who their public is, listen to outside experts and are not afraid to go out and try something new. Bullshit has never been a good adviser.

What's a good example of a company or product using the wrong typeface?

All those that hide behind well-tried, popular choices without considering the actual situation, the readership, the intended impression. I think Apple could do better than using Helvetica which is neither original nor suited to small screens.

What elements do you consider when making a typeface decision?

Tone of voice, languages that need to be used, technical constraints, readership, cultural constraints (i.e. particular reading habits), the media involved, the budget...

You were quoted in the Design Council as saying that the staff of The Economist were "the best clients I’ve ever had." What makes a good client and how does this help you as a designer? What can a designer or agency do to help create good clients?

Not take part in pitches (my company, Edenspiekermann, does not do pitches), listen carefully (which you cannot do within a pitch situation), have an opinion and not be afraid to voice it, do your homework, avoid doing things because they’re "in", don’t perform for your peers. Be honest, learn to say no, consider yourself a partner and not a vendor. And don’t be afraid to ask for proper payment for the value you create.

You were a signatory on the First Things First 2000: A Design Manifesto, which proposes "a reversal of priorities in favor of more useful, lasting and democratic forms of communication - a mindshift away from product marketing and toward the exploration and production of a new kind of meaning." How have you incorporated the tenets of the manifesto into your work as a designer?

We have published our own manifesto and we will not work for clients whose aims we do not agree with. But that has to do mainly with their attitude, not their products. I call it the "asshole rule": we do not work for assholes, however cool their product may be.

You say of Helvetica that it doesn’t have any contrast to it. But you have also called it beautiful. Can you please clarify your position on Helvetica?

It is perfect for what it is. Helvetica was designed to have no specific character and the designers achieved that. So it is beautiful in that sense, but not suited to a lot communication tasks that require an attitude, a voice. Neither is it suited to be used small on screens because too many of its characters can be confused with each other, like l and I, 3 and B, or rn and m.

In your keynote conversation with Jeff Veen at Gigaom, he commented that there is a tremendous amount of fashion involved in typography, which changes all the time. What’s the latest fashion in typography?

By the time you read this, it’ll have changed. Right now, we have many fashions going on at the same time. One that’ll be around for a while is the handmade look. Even electronically generated typefaces are made to look like there were printed letterpress from damaged type, or handwritten with wobbly pens.

In your book you mention that typefaces that were legible only a few decades ago can hardly be read by modern audiences -- that it has to do with cultural perceptions, not the physical properties of the typefaces. Based on trends in modern typefaces, are there certain typefaces today that will be barely readable in another 50 years?

Perhaps those that depend on the look of a technology, like bitmaps. But all type that has its origin in writing will be legible because we’ll still have hands and pens. Or will we?

Other than your own book, which resources would you recommend to someone who is interested in learning more about typography?

There’s a list in the back of the book, too long to repeat here. There are great websites and blogs, just google "type" and "typography" and you’ll be surprised.

Why do you own 13 bicycles?

Because they’re all different. Some have different uses, like for racing, for the city, for carrying loads, for going cross country. And some are just plain beautiful.

You have a fondness for vintage Leica cameras. Why, and do you actually use them or just collect them?

I never collected, I just bought an old one back in the 70s because I couldn’t afford a new one, then upgraded to a new M3, then to a new M6 (all analog film cameras), then a few digital Leicas which weren’t all that good (nor too expensive), then the first really useful digital M8 and recently the new M. Okay, perhaps there are a few old ones in that I found and had to rescue. But I never went looking, don’t belong to a collector’s club. I don’t know the serial numbers of my cameras and I can use every lens I ever bought because Leica hasn’t changed their standard.

You appear very fit. Do you attribute this to your love of type?

It’s all the long-distance reading.

What are you most excited about regarding your upcoming TYPO conference, to be held in San Francisco on April 10-11? What do you hope people get out of it?

Find out that there are other typomaniacs out there, that typography is not a closet activity anymore. It is great to listen to inspiring lectures and hang out with your peers. We all need to get out and see what’s happening.

About the Author

Erik Spiekermann is an information architect, type designer (ff Meta, itc Officina, ff Info, ff Unit, LoType, Berliner Grotesk, and many corporate typefaces), and author of numerous books and articles on type and typography.

He was founder of MetaDesign, Germany’s largest design firm, as well as FontShop, a company for the production and distribution of electronic fonts. He is a board member of the German Design Council and past president of the International Society of Typographic Designers (istd), as well as the International Institute for Information Design (iiid).

In 2001, Spiekermann left MetaDesign and now runs Edenspiekermann with offices in Berlin, Amsterdam, London, and San Francisco.

In 2011, the German Design Council gave Spiekermann its highest award for Lifetime Achievement. That year, he also received the tdc Medal and the SoTA award. In 2012, the German Art Directors Club gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Great introductory book to typography

I'm a graphic designer and typographer with 20+ years of experience, a typeface designer, and I teach college level design and typography classes. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to typography, or for new designers who want to learn more about using type well. I use this book as required reading in my Typography 2 courses.

This book has been revised every 10 years, to keep up with technology. It is worth your while to pick up the newest edition.

Typography explained in simplicity and style

Effortless read, with a playful yet easy on the eyes layout, tons of images and a pinch of humor.
This book is everything you should know about typography before you can call yourself a Graphic Designer (on LinkedIn or elsewhere).

Wonderfully explained principals, including historic references in a nutshell and type classification.

The book displays specific examples of type and makes understanding its characteristics through its anatomy a breeze.
You will instantly grasp the handy vocabulary (body, baseline, ascenders, descenders, x-height, cap-height, counter, kern, serif) and become familiar with it in a matter of seconds.
You will learn and understand how and why these and other characteristics give different typefaces the personalities used by Graphic Designers to convey a mood, an emotion an attribute.
You will quickly realize why some typefaces are more legible than others and become aware of when that matters the most.

And there is a lot more.
But don't let me bore you any longer with how much I love this book and how much I think that any Graphic Designer should have this in their library.

Highly recommend to anyone looking to take their lifting to new heights

The programming principles outlined are the essentials for year-round training that promote the health and continued growth of any athlete, powerlifter, or average Joe.

The book arrived just fine.

I enjoyed chapter 8. The writer is a teacher and I suppose he takes the need for repetition to heart. The book is very repetitive. In fact, in case I need to reread something, I cross out things that are not necessary to read; it could amount to a whole paragraph. However, it has stimulated my thinking.

Good Undergraduate level book. Would like to see more "psychology' in this text, otherwise, it's a very readable book. Material is mostly relevant to human resource management and HR law. Not exactly what I thought it would be but enjoyable book overall.

A Story We Respond To

From the opening quote in his Introduction to the the Appendix, Justin Buzzard is telling a story. It's a timely story today for those lost in the matrix of social networking, digital friends, and shallow narratives. This particular narrative Justin advocates for is what he calls The Big Story.

We all can ask, "What's your story?" But Justin takes it further to ask, "What sort of story are you in" (pg. 10). When people today are looking for meaning out of life yet skeptical of what truth looks is, it is Justin's conviction that the Big Story is the story that is needed to answer our questions. "It's a complicated and challenging story. It's a thrilling story [...] the only story big enough to make sense out of everything you've been through and everything you and the people you love will face in the future" (pg. 11). It's evident Justin has a love for people and a passion for them to know and be changed by this great story. His strength is his pastoral spirit woven throughout his words looking to meet people on whatever path they are journeying on, inviting them to "live into" and "examine" the Big Story found in the pages of the Bible.

It's important for Justin to start in the middle of the story: the story of Jesus. Just as film and literature critics use the term in media res, (Latin for “in the middle of the action”), Justin takes us in the middle of the action within the Big Story to tell us about Jesus. "Jesus disturbs our lives" (pg. 17) and there is no way around what he said and what he did; we all have to react to him, Justin writes. Starting here, in the middle of the story, draws us in to ask how it all began and ultimately how it concludes. This is where Justin takes us, to the beginning, while allowing the plot to develop in five acts: God, Creation, Rebellion, Rescue, Home.

Through personal adventures in his own life, Justin is candid, funny, and passionate. He has a big view of God and is enthralled by the story God is writing in his own life. "A true view of God will both radically disturb your life and set you free" (pg. 26). He is a testimony of this.

Through each of the acts, Justin demonstrates God's goodness toward us and how the Gospel comes alive to change us. One of his greatest strengths in this book is Justin's ability to be gospel-centered throughout.

In a book about a story, Justin does a phenomenal job at retelling the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15). The chapter Act Four: Rescue is clearly Justin's pivotal and best written chapter in the book and probably his favorite to write. He expounds on the story of the prodigal son returning home after a life of rebellion and the father's act of running to his beloved son, welcoming him home. "This is the heart of Christianity," Justin writes, "God takes the initiative to run after sinners [...] so that the sinner may be set free and forgiven" (pg. 96). This chapter is so well done, it beckons us to re-imagine the kind of love God has for the rebel in all of us and to celebrate the grace given in Jesus Christ.

This book is strong and is calling us to reflect, re-imagine and react to the story of God. Justin doesn't want us to just be found in a narrative, but to react and respond to the good news within it. He challenges us to "action steps" at the end of each chapter and that is the heart of this book: find yourself in The Big Story, be transformed and retell it others!

A Great Reminder of a Great (BIG) Story

The Big Story by Justin Buzzard is a great book that I highly recommend. The book is suited for someone checking out Christianity, a new Christian, or even people that have been in the faith for a while. It serves as a good reminder that we all live life serving something or someone. "The Big Story" is biblically based and is centered on the fact that Jesus came, served, died, and arose on our behalf. Jesus' story is portrayed throughout the book with the lens that all of us have our own natural desire to live out our lives through a story. One personal favorite is the section on "Play Big". It is interesting how often we tend to downplay our strengths or don't live boldly and get caught up in the mundane details of life. By playing big with purpose, Justin shows us that we can do amazing things through the Gospel.

The book is a refreshing look that we can live the most exciting life by accepting Christ and The Big Story through an unconditional love and grace.

A generally solid overview of the "Big Story" of the Bible

Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? Do I have a purpose? Answers to such questions make up our worldview, and our worldview drives the course of our lives whether we're aware of it or not. For many of us, however, the stories of which we're a part are simply inadequate to answer these kinds of questions.

In The Big Story, Justin Buzzard upholds the story of Scripture as the only one able to "explain all the beauty and all the brokenness we see in this world, to make sense of our desires, dreams, and disappointments" (11). He urges readers to consider the story they're living in, to recognize the gaps and failings of competing worldviews, and to embrace "the old and ongoing story of the Bible."

Buzzard, lead pastor of Garden City Church in Silicon Valley, California, presents the Bible's narrative in five acts: Jesus, God, creation, rebellion, and rescue.

Beginning with Jesus is the right decision, one unfortunately passed over by many books attempting to show the power in the story of redemption. He is, after all, the main character in this unfolding drama--and the whole point of the story. Whether for him or against him, everyone must somehow respond to him. His presence is too disruptive for us to remain neutral or silent. Buzzard makes this point clear: "People have to respond to Jesus because . . . he doesn't leave things as they are; he both attracts people to himself and meddles with their lives" (17).

Anyone who has put his trust in Christ understands this process. Again, Buzzard writes, "Jesus doesn't adjust to us, and he doesn't submit to our whims. We adjust to Jesus and submit to him. Jesus is King, not an accessory" (115). Once again, Buzzard is exactly correct: King Jesus lovingly hates your status quo.

Throughout the book, Buzzard's desire for the lost to come to know Jesus shines. He rightly reminds his readers that what they think about God is "the most important thing about you. . . . What you believe (or don't believe) about God drives how you live" (25). He desperately wants folks to see their place in a story that, first and foremost, begins with God:

"We often insist on living as if we are the beginning, the origin, the primary character. We live life under the banner of 'In the beginning, me.' But the Bible doesn't begin with 'In the beginning, Justin,' or 'In the beginning, [insert your name here].' It boldly states, 'In the beginning, God.'" (28)

Clearly, there's a lot to like in The Big Story. Buzzard does a good job with key elements of the Bible's narrative and keeps the reader moving at a brisk pace. Likewise, he does an excellent job conveying the necessity of an urgent response.

The Big Story faithfully focuses on eliciting a response to Jesus. Buzzard comes across as incredibly passionate in his desire to see people know his Savior. However, I fear his passion sometimes muddies the waters when it comes to the deepest problem facing humanity: sin.

To be clear, Buzzard isn't systemically soft on sin, and there are places where strong language is employed--it's "like a malignant tumor, one we are born with" (74); it's "sickness" and "rebellion" (92). Nevertheless, the overwhelming view of sinners presented throughout the book is one of "broken" people who "do not yet know Jesus." They are described as trying to fill their "emptiness with something other than God" (32) or choosing "to build [their] identity on things that hurt [them] and make [them] feel small and . . . dissatisfied" (57). People need to know that "the only being who thinks more about you than you, is God. And when he thinks of you, he thinks, very good" (59).

While there's certainly some truth to this point--idolatry is indeed the root of all sin--it's equally true that unrepentant sinners are far more than "broken people." The uncomfortable reality is that, apart from Christ, we're actively rebelling against God--not merely running away from him, but waging war against him. As Paul puts it, left to ourselves we are "children of wrath" (Eph. 2:3). This, I suppose, highlights a methdological flaw in Buzzard's book: it was unclear at times whether he was using certain language in reference to redeemed, repentant sinners or to unredeemed, unrepentant ones--those still in rebellion, still under the wrath of God.
