Not sure this one works

I have several of the boks from this series and I do like most of them - apart from this one. This book contains the more idiosyncratic Zen stories. The main problem is that if you haven't understood those stories before you might not really understand them after having read this book. This is mainly due to the stories' nature and, of course, not due to the way the artist presents them. I did know some but not all of the stories before I read this book. I found that the ones I knew were presented in a nice way but I had doubts the comics made them clear. So if you want to learn more about Zen you might want to get the "Shouts of Nothingness" book from the same series and another book, maybe one by Suzuki. Zen is a hard topic to talk/write about in the first place and putting the hardest bits into a format like this doesn't really seem to work.
PS: If you understand the stories why would you want to read any book about them anyway?

Another useful addition in the series, just not as good as the original

As with Zen Speaks, this, the follow up book takes information directly from Zen texts and presents it in the form of an illustrated story. I enjoyed the original Zen Speaks more than this follow up book; however, this is certainly a useful addition to those interested in acquiring further knowledge of Zen.

About the Author

Ngugi wa Thiong'o was born in Limuru, Kenya, in 1938, was educated at the Alliance High School, Kikuyu, at Makerere University, Uganda and at the University of Leeds.
His novel, Weep Not, Child, was published in 1964 and this was followed by The River Between (1965), A Grain of Wheat (1967), and Petals of Blood (1977). Devil on the Cross (1980), was conceived and written during the author's one-year detention in prison, in Kenya, where he was held without trial after the performance by peasants and workers of his play Ngaahika Ndeenda (I Will Marry When I Want). This was his first work to be published in his own language, Gikutu, and then translated into English and many other languages. His novel Matigari, was published in Gikuyu in Kenya in 1986.

The author has also written collections of short stories, plays and numerous essays. Ngugi is an active campaigner for the African language and form, and he writes, travels and lectures extensively on this theme. His work is known throughout the world and has made powerful impact both at home and overseas.

He now lives and works in the United States, writing and lecturing, and is a Professor at New York University.

Excellent novel

In this powerful novel Ngugi Wa Thiongo presents the conflicts that colonialism generated. The presence of the white man divided communities and eroded the traditions. In this Gigukuyu country, two villages in the ridges turned against each other as one embraced the Whiteman's religion and considers the cultural traditions satanic. Joshua led this Christian faction and insisted on a puritanical approach to the point that he denied two of his own daughters who associated with the tradition (Muthoni presenting herself for ritual circumcision and Nyambura falling in love with a non Christian, Waiykami.) Kaboni, a former ally of Joshua is the one who turns against Joshua's faith and leads the community to take oaths of purity to the traditions. Could they be a middle way? That is what Waiykami tries to forge, bringing unity between the two traditions. Would he succeed? Read this fascinating story to find out.

The Split of Villages

"The River Between" is a novel written by Ngugi Wa Thiong'o based on the separation of two neighboring villages of Kenya that are torn apart by their differences of faith. It depicts and analyzes the conflict between missionaries seeking to spread their Christian faith and the indigenous African tribes. It also explores the consequences of living under colonialism and describes the African fight for independence from colonial powers. As Ngugi Wa Thiong'o grew up in this time and first hand witness it happened he used this book to get his story out. The Main character, Waiyaki, I believe Thiong'o used him to actually portray himself in a way and the situation he witness growing up. One thing that stood out to me was Ngugi Wa Thiong'o's writing style. He was very descriptive in his diction use and that caused me to become visually inclined in the book. He also used many analogies or symbolisms that correlated between certain conflicts that made you think about different situations in perspective throughout the novel. This novel I believed got Thiong'o's story out and it makes the reader aware of Africa's past and even current struggles.

The painful conflicts and suffering caused by this. Very little good about westerners here, although there are plenty of other books where the Westerner is the hero, so take your pick. what I really loved about this one is the authors concise style, his brilliant handling of the English language. Highly recommended

Grade 4-6-- Marty Preston, 11, is a country boy who learns that things are often not what they seem, and that adults are not always "fair" in their dealings with other people. Marty finds a stray dog that seems to be abused and is determined to keep it at all costs. Because his family is very poor, without money to feed another mouth, his parents don't want any pets. Subsequently, there is a lot of conflict over the animal within the family and between Marty and Judd Travers, the dog's owner. Honesty and personal relations are both mixed into the story. Naylor has again written a warm, appealing book. However, readers may have difficulty understanding some of the first-person narration as it is written in rural West Virginian dialect. Marty's father is a postman--usually one of the better paying positions in rural areas--yet the family is extremely poor. There seems to be an inconsistency here. This story won the Newbery for a very good reason

"Shiloh" is an incredible story, and a worthy recipient of the Newbery Award. Much of the genius of "Shiloh" can be found in its simplicity. At its core, this is a tale about love, loyalty, and family. It is perhaps even more relevant today than when it was published, for the financial struggles of the protagonist's family are something that many families are currently dealing with in these difficult times of economic hardship. In the face of these challenges, our characters (and the readers following them) come to understand the necessity of supporting your family, and the values of taking responsibility for the life of another living being (and the empathy that such a thing instills).

I strongly recommend "Shiloh" for children. It's a great book, and relatively short, as well, which should make it more accessible for reluctant readers. Those who have a fondness for dogs will be even more inclined to enjoy it. As far as how adults will perceive it, those who appreciate children's literature will like it, for the author writes in an engaging voice, entertaining voice.

They loved this book and the story of Shiloh

I read this with my 2 boys who are 11 and 9. They loved this book and the story of Shiloh. Once we would start reading at night, they didn't want to stop. They are usually pretty egger to get reading time over with, so that tells you something about this story.

Boys will love this one!

My son loved it! My son really appreciated and identified with the story since he also has a pet dog that he loves and cares for. I really appreciated the value of the lesson in the humane treatment of animals. Also, I love the moral lessons of this book, especially when those moral lesson are shown to be supreme over man's laws. In the end, the main characters get things straightened out between them and there is peace, which is also exceedingly valuable.
