Brilliant!

This book is not only about guidelines for finding a new job, but it is also a brilliant pathway to discover different sides of your own self. I highly recommend this book to those who feel lost and are looking for a better life for themselves but don't know what should be their first step. This wonderful book helped me to overcome a state of melancholy and gave me the incentive to try again and keep moving forward. It is inspiring and shows the actual possibility of living a life happy!!! It is one of the best books I've read so far.

Great Guidance

I am taking a "radical sabbatical". I just didn't know it until I read this book. If you are looking to make a career change, but are unsure what you want to do this book is perfect. It doesn't provide lists of careers based on personality types or tests, it provides guidance on how to do the job research based on your interests. It helps you come to terms with possible salary changes and education requirements. I'm thoroughly enjoying the process and wish I'd found the books years ago or at the very least 4 months ago when I first lost my job.

Worth a read. No revelations or prescriptions, but a good set of questions to think on...

It's a lot of "obvious" advice, sure. But much like proverbs, quotations and other types of positive reaffirmation, one can never get enough of them. I think it gets the job done for its target audience. If you're looking for a push or a nudge into the wilderness that is "following your dream, not just your career goal", this book is a worthy addition to your psychological launchpad. The examples and stories are only mildly motivating but true value of the book lies in the set of questions the author asks you answer for yourself. If you take them seriously, they may go a long way toward identifying exactly what fulfilling work would look like to you. It worked for me, somewhat. It motivated me set aside time everyday to think hard about what I would call fulfilling work. The questions provide a decent framework. The process is meditative and introspective and requires a lot of emotional stamina. It may take a while. I don't expect overnight epiphanies and, I suspect, neither should most people.

I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I don't think the book will resonate with everyone. For example, if you're married with kids and a mortgage and other responsibilities, some of the advice will seem impractical.

Engineering for sustainability is an emerging theme for the twenty-first century. On campuses, new courses on renewable and efficient power systems are being introduced, while the demand for practicing engineers with expertise in this area is rapidly increasing. Written both for professionals seeking a self-study guide and for upper division engineering students, Renewable and Efficient Electric Power Systems is a design-oriented textbook that gives readers a comprehensive understanding of distributed power generation systems and renewable energy technologies. Numerous worked examples in the text illustrate the principles, while problems at the ends of each chapter provide practical applications using realistic data.

The author begins with an overview of the development of today's electric power industry, including the historical and regulatory evolution of the industry, and provides an introduction to the technical side of power generation, including the basics of electric and magnetic circuits, three-phase power, and thermodynamics. After introducing conventional steam-cycle, gas-turbine, combined-cycle, and cogeneration power plants, he leads the reader into emerging technologies including:

An Important Book on Renewable Electric Power Systems

Here is a book that is needed by those (especially engineers) interested in energy systems for the future. It has broad coverage and yet enough depth to allow design of new systems. Professor Masters' casual writing style and his sense of humor make the book fun to read.

The book covers wind systems, photovoltaic cells(PV) and PV systems, distributed generation (concentrating solar power, microhydro, fuel cells, biomass), and economics of renewable electric power generation and comparison with conventional thermal power plants. This book is important as the engineering world moves into the era of rising energy prices and is compelled to provide alternatives to fossil and nuclear fueled generation. There are abundant very helpful examples worked out in the text.

We used this book in a one semester introduction to renewable power taught as an elective for senior and first year graduate students. Since this was the first time the course was taught by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of NH, and our first time through the book, the course covered only a subset of chapters.

The book provides solid engineering background for topics discussed in applied "how to" books on renewable energy systems. It will appeal to that person who wants deeper understanding of principles. The ideas - both theoretical and practical - are carefully developed.

We read a good number of the problems at the end of the chapters we covered and assigned a subset of those. We found the book problems to be very enlightening and carefully thought out. Many of the problems provided profound insight and preparation for understanding and using the material studied. Even the first chapter on basic electrical and magnetic circuits has problems involving models for photovoltaic modules.

a beautiful mind...
By Two Scents
I've scoured several texts, journals and articles on renewable energy to make sense of the various technologies and their underlying economics, but wasn't until I stumbled upon this hidden treasure that the cloud lifted and the light dawned on my bewildered mind. And it took me a few months to scrub the book cover-to-cover - I was so taken in by the author's mastery of the subject matter and its concise, cogent and crystal-clear presentation.

Prof. Masters assumes nothing of the reader and takes her/him through a narrative that is just so-perfectly blended with rigorous, yet first-order analytical methods to enable the joyous discovery and lucid understanding of most of the major renewable sources of energy - from the gusty wind to the brilliant sun. He explains, proves and illustrates the logic, the math and the mechanics of the what, why and how it all works. He then gets under the hood and crunches the numbers (the economics) of if, when and where it all makes sense.

For instance, he'd prove Betz's law for the maximum efficiency of a wind turbine or derive the average wind power with a Rayleigh p.d.f by totally simplifying the convoluted math and soon follow it up with a practical example of whether it makes economic sense for a farmer to lease his land to a wind farm. Every concept is suffused with first-rate real-world examples:
* should a house in Boulder, CO use a single-axis tracker for a photo-voltaic installation? How about Madison, WI?
* what is the carbon spewed out by a coal-fired power plant? How does that compare to a combined cycle natural gas plant?

In addition to a fair amount of coverage of various renewable and distributed energy resources, a complete soup-to-nuts analysis of photo-voltaic design, sizing and analysis is presented. And it doesn't stop there. Energy efficiency is a major theme - ever heard of absorption cooling? All of this material is developed in the context of `basic electricity' that powers and runs most everything today (except vehicles of course, but that's also soon coming...) The beauty of it all is the seemingly effortless simplicity in which the concepts are explained/analysed without sacrificing rigor - it just flows!

In this age of hype and bias, a certain amount of disinformation coming from the media is understandable. But, living in Silicon Valley, I find it amusing to hear even respectable venture capitalists touting/undermining this technology or that without getting their facts/numbers right - perhaps they are vested or they are simply clueless, like I once was and still continue to be often. Whereas, having earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering at Stanford, Prof. Masters has spent his entire lifetime around these issues (has been there, done that) and has distilled the better part of some of what he's learned into this book. Reading it is a bit like peering into a beautiful mind, indeed. Whether you are a serious student out to change the world, an academic do-gooder, a VC moneybag, a hobbyist moonlighter, I cannot recommend this book enough. It is by far, the best such introductory text in this field.

Remarkable for its breadth, depth and clarity

I've been a practicing solar energy professional for over 10 years: My bachelor's was in EE, master's degree in solar energy engineering and now work as a solar project developer and investor. I picked up this book at the PV America conference a couple of days ago - and read the whole PV grid-connected section towards the end of the book. I also read through the early "intro" chapters and the

The book covers a huge, but highly relevant selection of topics. Bottoms up, if you're building up from basics, it covers all the relevant basics in the early chapters, and technology-specific basics wherever relevant. e.g. the PV coverage of cell-basics, equivalent circuits and modeling, and adding up to modules and array performance, system sizing and economic analysis is very well done - you have enough knowledge after reading these chapters to do calculations, basic-to-advanced designs, and understand more detailed texts.

As a reference, almost anyone would benefit from the more advanced and thorough discussions. e.g. in the discussion on DC, standalone PV systems, you can quickly go through key issues relating to PV module performance with specific types of loads, e.g. resistors, DC motors etc, and understand the impact of max power point trackers, and design issues. The author has thought through the text from the readers' point of view: Every relevant angle was discussed and covered with clear text, plus wherever relevant, numerical calculation examples are given such that a reader can replicate in real-life situations.

A complaint and a couple of warnings. My one gripe: Much of the industry data in the book is "old", i.e. 2002-2003 vintage. I have access to more recent data, but an update to the book might be useful. Caution (who's this book for): If you're not an engineer by training, have no technical background, and don't like numbers, this book will be of limited use to you - though far from useless. Also, if you're an experienced engineer working in either solar or wind design, your main utility for this book will be as a reference, a quick overview of basics and less-used topics.

All in all, I was waiting for a book like this for a while. I'm glad I bought this, despite a discounted (conference) price above $120, and look forward to using it as a reference for a long time.

Voices in the Night

Gritty, dusty, muddy, ballast-strewn dirt under foot. A coppery feeling in the mouth. Eyes strained and burning, almost too tired to open. Perpetual noise---the incessant squeaking, grinding, thumping and crashing of heavy, lumbering machinery. Break time, and the codgers slumping in straight-back chairs leaned against the wall are all snoring, smoking, or describing their latest sexual conquests. Oily, smoky air stinking of hot grease. The feel, smell, look and sound of heavy industry, all the same day after day, night after night. These are the sensations that Niemann and Bertucci's book leaves in the reader's mind.
The title and even the subject matter notwithstanding, I hesitate to categorize this book as a volume on railroading. The impressions of the people and their work-lives that are featured in the prose and the photographs are descriptive of all those who labor in the blue-collar jobs of heavy industry. These railroaders have much in common with miners, steel mill workers, grain elevator operators, truck builders, and all the rest on whom our nation's economy depends.
If we must, because of its focus, speak of it as a railroad book, let us be clear about what it is not: There are no ballads or wreck songs here, no folklore about John Henry or Casey Jones, no heroic histories of rail disasters, no financial analyses or statistics of ton-miles hauled or ruminations on the nostalgic era of steam locomotives. What we really have is a book of contemporary photographs, some taken with film and some painted with the brush of words. Both kinds of photos reveal the grass-roots operating railroader and the real, unembellished, and usually uninspiring environment in which he or she labors.
What is the lasting value of this book? It is truly American sociology and history. Not the history of the corporate board room. Not the history of company economics. Not even the technological history behind roller bearings and the huge diesel-electrics that haul unit trains from Powder River coal fields to the ravenous furnaces of east coast electrical generating plants. The history in this book is both more basic and more essential, for it shows us the working conditions of the people who make the machine run, whose work enables the rail corporations to prosper, and whose personalities are shaped by the unsympathetic and unending tasks set for them.
If, Gentle Reader, you react badly to harsh language, to untempered sexual remarks, or to photos including "explicit" centerfolds taped to a yardman's locker door, then perhaps this book is not destined for your reading list. On the other hand, if you find fascination (or perhaps reminiscence) in unexpurgated portrayals of blue-collar working Americans or if you merely wish to understand the demands of such work and how it shapes the people who perform it, then I believe that you will treasure this book as a most worthy addition to your library. Whether you shelve it with your books on sociology, heavy industry, American history, or transportation will be your call. It integrates them all.
By the way, if you find fulfillment with "Railroad Voices," explore "Set Up Running," a similar exploration into the life of a real, unremarkable railroader, an engineman on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Both books show us the real world of the railroad employee with grease on his (or her) clothes, gloves on his (or her) hand, and a union dues deduction in his (or her) paycheck.

Linda is unique

I was a Switchman for the SP Railroad in LA just as Linda was starting out and had the pleasure of working with her several times before she was forced to move to other parts of the system because of her low Seniority. Let me just say that if you really want to know the real deal regarding railroads I really don't think anyone could have combined the reality of the railroad persons life with the human issues capabilities of Steinbeck like she succeeded in doing. This woman is a rare treasure and gift to all of us interested in railroads and railroad history.

Train to Dystopia

Railroad Voices tells the story of two women encountering railroad life in the final decades of the 20th Century. It's an outlier relative to most railroad literature, which caters to train modelers and enthusiasts, or to historical and academic experts. This book speaks to an artistic and intellectually engaged audience without assuming any railroad interest. The railbuff or historian can come along for the ride, but shouldn't expect that their curiosities and sensibilities will be catered to. Railroad Voices focuses largely on the flesh-and-blood people who ran the trains and worked in the marshaling yards, where the trains started and ended their journeys.

Thus, from a railfan perspective, I was initially disappointed with Railroad Voices (but not to say that its stories and photographs are entirely devoid of technical interest). Also, as a former switch tower operator, I would have liked some pictures and stories from inside the switch towers (like the ones seen in Ms. Bertucci's photos from Milwaukee). Ditto for the dispatchers who directed train movements, plus the signal maintainers who kept the switches and signals working.

But no, this is a train crew's story told in words and photos. And it's a story well told.

Ms. Niemann's writings are pungent and compelling, and she directly confronts the distasteful and unpleasant aspects of railroad life in post-industrial America. Once upon a time, passenger trains served the elite of our nation, while tracks and freight trains were a necessary fixture to most every city neighborhood, along with the rural heartland. But times have changed, and today's remaining lines traverse the forgotten corners of our land, places populated by illegal immigrants, the mentally ill, homeless outcasts and criminal transients (far from the benign drunken hobos of 1960's suburban memory, recall the cute miniature hobo on the Lionel train under the Christmas tree).

Ms. Niemann's negative and tragic description of railroad life is thus more sad than surprising. The hours on the freight runs are long and unpredictable, managers often push beyond reason in the face of relentless competition from 57 foot tractor-trailers and inland barge lines, and the dangers of killing or being killed by a string of 70 ton freight cars never ceases. But what is especially tragic is Ms. Niemann's lack of any pride or consolation in being part of something as tangibly big and important as railroads still are to the American economy.

Workers once felt good about hiring on with the railroad; you were no longer just another "townie", another grocery store clerk or elementary school janitor. You were part of something stretching from coast to coast, the veins and arteries of American commerce. The work of a train crew was always hard and dangerous, but there was a sense of purpose that many if not most railroaders once shared. This spirit still seemed to exist when I worked on the Erie Lackawanna in 1970s.

It appears that over time, the believers were largely replaced by a younger, more cynical generation weaned on distrust, encouraged by the events of the Vietnam War and Watergate to conclude that "the whole system is corrupt". We railfans sensed the change. Through the early 70s, many railroaders accommodated railfan interest. Admittedly, there were always "rails" who wanted you off the property (often so they could pursue their "Rule G" violations, on-duty use of intoxicating substances). Others wondered aloud why intelligent people with cameras would waste their time studying and recording a world that was crumbling. I recall an old Lehigh Valley railroader saying that the railfan hobby was "like watching a man die of cancer".

But most of the old heads and many of the younger ones seemed complemented by our interest. Rail buffs affirmed that what they did was indeed important. How many garbage collection crews or taxi drivers have people following them, filming and admiring the details of their work?

Ms. Niemann by contrast is a railroader of the 1980's and 90's, when her attitude about railfans became common: "the brakeman stares out the window, wishing he were going to be home tonight, and angry at the rail buff because he constructs a fantasy, while the brakeman must live it". Her anger is partly with an enterprise that no longer believes in its own necessity and worth. Even into the 1970s, railroads painted their freight cars in catchy colors and adopted logos to impress the public with their "can-do" spirit. The Chessie System had a sleeping kitten, while the Southern "serves the south" and "gives a green light to innovation". The Union Pacific was "the automated railway" that "can handle it". And until the disastrous Penn Central merger of 1968, one predecessor line painted its boxcars a snappy jade green and called itself "The Road to the Future".

We're now in the post-Penn Central future, and the few railroads that survive are mostly profitable. Warren Buffet owns BNSF, one of the big-4 American systems. And yet, railroad management mostly turns away from public observation, painting their engines black or dark blue, pulling gray or dark brown freight cars ornamented with numbers and little else. It's thus not surprising that employees also disfavor attention. The attitude of railroad owners, managers and workers appears to be that "we still make money and are needed, but that could change." This attitude is not unfounded; for example, Post-Panamax ships and the decline of coal usage due to global warming, cheap natural gas and improving green-energy could cause further railroad contraction.

Railroad Voices is a good reality fix, a reflection on the cruel edges of modern society at large. Ms. Bertucci and Niemann provide an increasingly rare look beyond the entertainment front that digital technology has created for the "successful" class, a world view dominated by Facebook, Xbox, Netflix, NFL, etc. Their book peers into the un-pretty and uncertain part of America where necessary work is done -- but with such cynicism and spiritual degradation.

Howard Hendricks (Th.M., Dallas Theological Seminary; D.D., Wheaton College) is a distinguished professor and lecturer at Dallas Theological Seminary. He is also chairman of the Center for Christian Leadership and a keynote speaker for Promise Keepers. He serves on numerous ministry boards including Promise Keepers, The Navigators and Walk Thru The Bible. Dr. Hendricks has written or cowritten numerous books, including As Iron Sharpens Iron and Living by the Book. He and his wife, Jeanne, have four children.

Good book for teachers

This book provides seven ways to help you be a better teacher. The book is geared toward teaching the word of God, but could be applied to any subject.

The seven methods are summarized below:

1. Teachers never stop learning.
2. People learn differently - so teach them differently.
3. The most effective learning comes from involvement.
4. To communicate your subject you must know it well, believe it, and live it.
5. Teaching is from the heart, meaning your whole self.
6. Effective teaching is motivating.
7. Preparation of both teacher and student makes for the best learning experience.

The author dedicates one chapter each to the above mentioned topics. There is also an introductory chapter at the beginning and summary chapter at the end. At the end of each chapter there are some reflection type questions to ponder.

Overall, this is a good book and a worthwhile read if you are interested in improving your teaching.

This one is a must read from anyone. Prof Hendricks takes his usual down-to-earth style, and cram packs this book full of useful information. Whether you teach Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, or just want to be a more effective witness of the gospel, this book is for you.

Good book except for the nervous system

Good for many systems but does a disservice to the anatomy of the spinal cord which is almost entirely omitted from the manual. Other systems are better but if you need to understand the spinal cord you won't get much if anything from this book.

It was a gift to several graduates. As the extended families of these graduates get a chance to see the bible more and more are buying it and using it. I just made a trip to Israel to study and the archaeology notes line up well with what we saw and heard from some the top Israeli guides we had. So, get or give it away.

a great tool for new or mature Christians

There are certain authors whose names are associated with great books. Josh McDowell is one such author, and his son seems to be following in his footsteps. The two of them combined their efforts and came out with a great book and tool. They cover a lot in this book, 77 topics in all, and answer them in a Biblically-based way.

The book is split into two sections. The first section is all questions about God, and the second section are all questions about the Bible. The topics/questions cover about everything you can think of - some examples given above, and the authors do a great job of answering them in a way that doesn't still leave questions. This is the kind of book that would be great for new Christians, but none of us know everything we need to know, so this would be good for the most mature Christians among us. I have been reading the Bible since I was a kid, attended church, Christian school, and Bible college, and I still had some questions - some of them covered in this book.

It is an informative and helpful book that is also easy to read. The chapters are short, most of them 2-4 pages, and is the kind of book that you can read small portions daily. I would highly recommend it to be in any Christian's library.

I highly recommend this book to believers & non-believers alike! Regent's Park and Primrose Hill is a scenic tour between the covers of a book - you can see the sights through beautiful color photos and get a real sense of the area; you don't quite get the fresh air - but then again, your feet won't hurt at the end of your tour.
