The Oil and the Glory: The Pursuit of Empire and Fortune on the Caspian Sea, by Steve LeVine

Remote, forbidding, and volatile, the Caspian Sea long tantalized the world with its vast oil reserves. But outsiders, blocked by the closed Soviet system, couldn’t get to it. Then the Soviet Union collapsed, and a wholesale rush into the region erupted. Along with oilmen, representatives of the world’s leading nations flocked to the Caspian for a share of the thirty billion barrels of proven oil reserves at stake, and a tense geopolitical struggle began. The main players were Moscow and Washington–the former seeking to retain control of its satellite states, and the latter intent on dislodging Russia to the benefit of the West.
The Oil and the Glory is the gripping account of this latest phase in the epochal struggle for control of the earth’s “black gold.” Steve LeVine, who was based in the region for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Newsweek, weaves an astonishing tale of high-stakes political gamesmanship, greed, and scandal, set in one of the most opaque corners of the world. In LeVine’s telling, the world’s energy giants jockey for position in the rich Kazakh and Azeri oilfields, while superpowers seek to gain a strategic foothold in the region and to keep each other in check. At the heart of the story is the contest to build and operate energy pipelines out of the landlocked region, the key to controlling the Caspian and its oil. The oil pipeline that resulted, the longest in the world, is among Washington’s greatest foreign policy triumphs in at least a decade and a half.
Along the way, LeVine introduces such players as James Giffen, an American moneyman who was also the political “fixer” for oil companies eager to do business on the Caspian and the broker for Kazakhstan’s president and ministers; John Deuss, the flamboyant Dutch oil trader who won big but lost even bigger; Heydar Aliyev, the oft-misunderstood Azeri president who transcended his past as a Soviet Politburo member and masterminded a scheme to loosen Russian control over its former colonies in the Caspian region; and all manner of rogues, adventurers, and others drawn by the irresistible pull of untold riches and the possible “final frontier” of the fossil-fuel era. The broader story is of the geopolitical questions of the Caspian oil bonanza, such as whether Russia can be a trusted ally and trading partner with the West, and what Washington’s entry into this important but chaotic region will mean for its long-term stability.
In an intense and suspenseful narrative, The Oil and the Glory is the definitive chronicle of events that are understood by few, but whose political and economic impact will be both profound and lasting.

"The collapse of the Soviet Union was a big opportunity for Big Oil, whose exploits are detailed in this fast-paced work of political and economic reportage by Wall Street Journal energy correspondent LeVine.
Westerners had been sniffing for black gold in Russia and its satellites long before the empire disintegrated, notes the author. Averell Harriman, “the Harvard-trained scion of nineteenth-century robber baron Edward Harriman,” tried his hand at the business before turning to manganese mining, while Armand Hammer “became a money launderer for the Bolsheviks, sneaked cash to secret Bolshevik agents in the United States, and profited handsomely as the representative in Russia of some thirty American companies.” Hammer set the tone for the Americans who flocked to the Caspian in the first years of the Clinton presidency, which maneuvered for the construction of an east-west oil pipeline that, by reversing the old pattern of Central Asian materials going north to Russia and coming back as products for sale, “would favor the West and disfavor Russia.” Not a nice way to treat a fledgling democracy, but the oil scouts, of course, considered Russia a rival for Central-Asian resources second only to Iran, with its heartfelt and long-standing enmity toward the United States in the region and abroad. These scouts–the first among equals being LeVine’s heart-of-darkness antihero, Jim Giffen–kept their distance when Russia still had control over the area, spurning a Gorbachev-era program to allow foreign co-ownership. But they rushed to support separatist movements and encouraged ethnic and political divisions that opened the door to an even bigger share of the wealth. The tale of Giffen’s rise and fall (the latter for perhaps surprising reasons) occupies much of the later pages, but he never loses sight of the bigger picture: namely, Central Asia as oil lamp and potential powder keg in the realpolitik of the next few years.
A complex story rendered comprehensible, with much drama and intrigue."--KIRKUS

Review
"... the treat is in the roiling tale of the gambles, bravado, and maneuvering of the dealmakers. ... Like a good scenarist, LeVine develops the characters for each segment before proceeding with the plot. For people who liked Michael Douglas in Wall Street, here is an even more subtle and complex movie script." -- Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs magazine

"Superpowers, big oil, politics, human greed and exotic locale come together here in LeVine's skillful recitation." -- The Christian Science Monitor

From the Back Cover
Pipeline politics became a modern day version of the 19th Century's Great Game, in which Britain and Russia had employed cunning and bluff to gain supremacy over the lands of the Caucasus and Central Asia. The Oil and Glory is the story of how, at the dawn of the 21st century, the game was played once more across the harsh environs of the Caspian Sea.

Well balanced
By Tom
It is usually difficult task to describe certain era in a way that is complete, factually accurate and properly put into big picture context, yet remains easy to read. It is equally difficult to choose proper places to insert illustrative small stories and examples to explain situation and characters, yet not to diverge too much from the main story line. Steve Levine finds proper balance in all those respects. That is why the book is fantastic read.

The book also greatly illustrates how big deals are being done in a region with abundance of strategically important commodity, yet governed by unscrupulous rulers. For all the criticism of the big oil firms, in this book they end up as basically good guys.

Masterfully Written History of the Caspian Sea!
By Anonymous
Mr. LeVine has done a truly exceptional job of documenting decades of oil & gas pursuits in the Caspian Sea. As one of the people mentioned in this book, I can attest to the accuracy of this highly detailed account of what actually happened back in the 90's, as so many international oil players descended on the Central Asian Caspian nations and Russia, looking for high stakes oil & gas exploration, production and pipeline deals. Unscrupulous "middlemen" successfully "wedged" themselves into many of the deals, and outsmarted some of the industry's brightest players. This book should be required reading for anyone involved in international negotiations, not only involving areas of the Former Soviet Union, but elsewhere.

Mr. LeVine provides the reader with a tremendous amount of behind the scenes detail relating to how this geopolitically embroiled and charged game of high intrigue actually played out. The Caspian region became literally the global chess board for United States foreign policy. The author takes the reader on a journey where power and influence are the key criteria for decisions, and things are seldom what they seem on the surface. After reading this book, you will better understand why.

For any serious student of the oil industry or geopolitics in general, this book is a MUST READ. It is truly on par with The Prize! The Oil and the Glory definitely makes the point that fact is stranger, and better, than fiction!

Enjoyable oil history
By rvarghese
A terrific read which leaves the reader scratching his head at some points wondering how any of these deals ever got done in the Caspian region. Particularly interesting is the nexus of oil and geopolitical interests which shape many of the book's main events. Well worth a read.

Review
"This wide ranging book provides many important lessons on effective pricing. It bristles with empirical information, reviewing practices in industries from advertising and airlines to wine and wireless services. It then lays out the analytics underlying effective pricing, examining methodologies such as game theory and behavioral decision, and strategies and techniques, such as auctions, markdowns, and promotions. This book is thoroughly grounded in real world considerations, looking at matters from how to manage an effective pricing organization to how to conduct a global pricing strategy. Learn from this book in all aspects but one. Its price should have been set ten times as high. But then you should still buy it."

--Richard Zeckhauser, Frank P. Ramsey Professor of Political Economy, Kennedy School, Harvard University

Great Book!
By Julia
I found this book extremely helpful and very exiting. I am doing my PhD in Management science, and this text made me add pricing management to my "research interests" field. It is a very thorough and comprehensive review of current publications in the field of pricing, real-world examples and there are a lot of prospective research ideas in the end of each chapter.

The price is somewhat high, especially for a student. But it is definitely worth it. I purchased a Kindle edition to save some money, and it is pretty readable. Formula is well formatted, graphs look good and there was only one unscalable table. I am saying this because I have bad issues with formula in some of my other Kindle edition textbooks.

Great book for academics and practitioners.
By Wedad Elmaghraby
It is refreshing to find an academically rigorous book that addresses the multiple facets of pricing -- from optimization tools that characterize and obtain the 'best price(s)' and basic economic concepts to structure the formation of those prices -- to social norms and management implementation challenges that shape the way prices are implemented in practice.

I recommend this book to those searching for an resource that exposes themselves/ their students to the various lenses by which to view pricing management.

Thought in Action: Expertise and the Conscious Mind, by Barbara Gail Montero

How does thinking affect doing? There is a widely held view--both in academia and in the popular press--that thinking about what you are doing, as you are doing it, hinders performance. Once you have acquired the ability to putt a golf ball, play an arpeggio on the piano, or parallel-park, it is believed that reflecting on your actions leads to inaccuracies, blunders, and sometimes even utter paralysis. Experts, accordingly, don't need to try to do it; they just do it. But is this true? After exploring some of the contemporary and historical manifestations of the idea that highly accomplished skills are automatic and effortless, Barbara Gail Montero develops a theory of expertise that emphasizes the role of the conscious mind in expert action. Along the way, she dispels various mythical accounts of experts who proceed without any understanding of what guides their action and analyzes research in both philosophy and psychology that is taken to show that conscious control impedes well practiced skills. She also explores real-life examples of optimal performance--culled from sports, the performing arts, chess, nursing, medicine, the military and elsewhere--and draws from psychology, neuroscience, and literature to create a picture of expertise according to which expert action generally is and ought to be thoughtful, effortful, and reflective.

Review

"Thought in Action is convincing in its overall argument that philosophers and psychologists are mistaken when they denigrate the usefulness of conscious thought to optimal expert performance. And it also provides a detailed discussion of kinds of expert performance -- in dance, athletics, music, medicine, and chess -- that will be of interest to those who work in philosophy of mind and psychology, aesthetics, and action theory, whatever their concern with this overall thesis." -- Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews Online

The Legends of Ashildr is a glimpse of some of those stories: the terrors she has faced, the battles she has won, and the treasures she has found. These are tales of a woman who lived longer than she should ever have lived – and lost more than she can even remember. An original novel featuring the Twelfth Doctor as played by Peter Capaldi, and Ashildr as played by Maisie Williams.

Great idea but missed the mark - for me!
By LinnyJ
Frankly, I was disappointed. I loved this character and was excited when I saw the book. But it was not quite what I expected - yes, it was stories from the title character's extensive diaries documenting her life, but I simply did not like the stories told nor the way they were written. While I realize there is not yet a lot of history to draw on for this character, I did not feel her "voice" was captured well at all. The first story was a rather pointless retelling of the Arabian Nights. The rest did not improve much. This was a wasted opportunity. In her several appearances on Dr Who, she had a lot of say about her unwanted immortality and how she wrote everything down to be able to remember everything later. None of the poignant and even bitter and angry qualities of her "musings" came through here. Nice try but I hope someone else picks it up. Great cover art!

Having said all this, I do realize someone else might simply adore this book and respond angrily to my post. This is why I don't review books all that often because what one person likes another is bound to toss aside after one chapter - so take it with a grain of salt and see how YOU like it, which is what is important. Amazon sent me an email asking for reviews on a number of items, including this book, so I just went down the list.

Not So "Legendary"
By Matthew Kresal
As a fan of Doctor Who, it was hard not to be intrigued by the news of this anthology. Ashildr, played by Game Of Thrones Maisie Williams, was the subject of much debate before being properly introduced on-screen during last year's ninth season of the show's 21st century television incarnation. Granted a form of immortality, Peter Capaldi's Doctor would encounter her elsewhere during the events of the season. What was she up to the rest of the time, especially in the long gap between the two episodes that first featured her character. This anthology of stories (with entries by stalwart Doctor Who prose writers James Goss, David Llewellyn, Jenny T. Colgan, and Justin Richards) promised to fill in some of those gaps in Ashildr's story.

Being an anthology, it allows for a wider range of stories than perhaps a novel might have allowed. That said, if you're expecting the further adventures of Ashildr with the Doctor you're going to be disappointed as despite the show's logo and a TARDIS on the back cover, the Doctor doesn't even make a cameo appearance in any of the tales. The book, as its title might very well suggest, is focused on Ashildr exclusively so if you didn't like the character on screen you might wish to save your money on this volume. If, like me, you enjoyed the character than this is worth a read though you might still be somewhat disappointed in it.

Being an anthology also means that a book can be hit and miss in terms of quality, something that is
precisely the case of this particular anthology. The first two tales here, Goss' Arabian Nights reworking and Llewellyn's tale of sea going exploration, are both rather lackluster efforts, perhaps because they're written in the third person. Goss' tale in particular is utterly predictable and, when it isn't, it can be utterly confusing due a frequent change in point of view that had even this attentive reader wonder what was going on at times. Llewellyn's tale is something of an improvement as it has a nice twist towards the end to explain the story's events. That said, neither of them is especially exciting and Doctor Who has done similar types of stories far better elsewhere.

The other two stories in the book fair better, perhaps helped in some part by being written in the first person. The third story in the book, Jenny T. Colgan's Third Knives, is the stand out story of this volume. Picking up on a referenced event from the episode The Woman Who Died, the tale takes Ashildr to London where she encounters a strange event as plague once again hits the city. Yet Colgan wisely chose to explore Ashildr's character in greater depth than either of the stories that proceed it in the volume by having her face a terrible choice that makes for the volume's most heartbreaking moment. Colgan does what New Who in particular has done at its best by combining the extraordinary with the ordinary and finding powerful emotions in the mix.

Justin Richards' The Ghosts of Branscombe Wood closes the volume and takes it into familiar territory once again. Longtime fans of what might be termed “British telefantasy” will recognize the pedigree of this story which brings Ashildr to Branscombe Wood and its apparently haunted roads. While it lacks the emotional kick of Colgan's tale, it's still an effective piece of storytelling as the past comes back to haunt Ashildr and she sets out to solve the hauntings. It's a nice way to conclude the volume as it brings Ashildr to about where she is in The Woman Who Lives.

While it's definitely not the best piece of Doctor Who related fiction out there, it nevertheless makes for interesting reading, even more so if you're a fan of the Ashildr character. Colgan's tale in particular a well written piece and the standout tale of this volume and one of the better pieces of Who related prose in recent memory. The Legends Of Ashildr then has its moments but also comes across as having a lot of unfulfilled promise thanks to the two lackluster tales that open the volume. Maybe next time chaps?

Filled in some gaps

Really good book. Interesting stories that filled in some of the gaps left by the show and gave some understanding to the character and what she'd been through.

4 Not What I Expected Stars
By Little Spice
It’s a dreary, yucky, rainy weekend perfect for a dark read so Willing Captive sounded like a good fit. I really liked it, but it was not dark. I should have known it wouldn’t be since I’m a fan of BA’s friend zoned series and there is nothing dark about it. Willing Captive had sad moments, but mostly it was funny. It definitely brightened my dark little day.

Lily is kidnapped, or is she? Cut off from her family, she has no idea. Doesn’t know who to trust so she acts accordingly…sort of. I like Lily, but at times she seemed just so very young and immature. She was sheltered and over-protected growing up, so I understood why she was so immature but it still got on my last nerve at times. She grows as the book progresses which is good since she definitely needed to. I mean, she called Nox’s dick a pee-pee, more than once. It made me cringe every time, in fact I cringed as I typed it. Pee-Pee aside, Lily is funny and her inner thoughts had me burst out in a laugh more than once.

I did not like Nox at first. Keeping her cut off from her family for so long made absolutely no sense to me. Why let her believe she was kidnapped for any time at all? It just didn’t compute. Once that little mix up got straightened out, I liked Nox and the book a lot more. He was definitely a broody alpha but I like them like that. It would have been nice to know more about his job and what it really was. Some revalations clued me in that it wasn’t just security, and more of an explanation as to why all the secrecy and false names would have been appreciated.

The main focus of the story is the relationship between Nox and Lily. It’s a slow burn, no insta-love here. It’s all about thoughts, touches, and confused feelings (especially for super sheltered Lily) at first. There are lots of obstacles in the way, and no one knows what will happen after Lily is deemed safe. There is a mystery here – why is there a threat against Lily? It’s not Nox’s job to solve it, his main focus is to keep Lily safe. I think having the mystery solved “off camera” was a mistake. I would have loved to have been along for the ride as it was solved.

I adored Rock and Boo and hope one day to see a book about them. I liked the fact two completely tough people had a working relationship in a high pressure field, yet still figured out how to make things work for them. The fact that Rock was hilarious was icing on the cake.

Although not perfect, I enjoyed the heck out of this book. I wish it was part of a series, or at least that we’ll see more of some of the characters.

Quirky, funny, emotional ride...
By texasreader-stacy
I wish I had read this one before reading Raw, because Nox and Lily make a "cameo" appearance in that story. So I already knew how they turned out. But, even knowing that, I really enjoyed their story. At times, Lily seems too weak, too weepy, far too emotional. But you have to remember that she has been very sheltered, she has not been allowed to experience anything normal teenagers or young adults have. Watching her discover her own personality and her own feelings was like watching someone walk for the first time. You want to warn them, catch them, cheer them on. Nox is a conundrum, he is this Alpha bad boy, living a life that really isn't a life at all. He doesn't "exist" as far as the real world is concerned. He does the jobs that need to be done invisibly. And something about Lily pulls at him and he can't look away. Their story was fun, hot, tragic, and sweet. I don't know how Belle Aurora does it, but somehow her writing style pulls me in emotionally and I have now cried several times in two days from reading this book and Raw. Not many authors can do that, write in a way that has you locked into every detail. Walking along with each character and feeling their emotions like you were there with them. Sappy I know. Belle Aurora is moving up to be one of my favorite new authors to watch.

Fated for each other..
By Tbascoebuzz
Not all stories are for all people....I mean after all, we are all so individually unique with our own tastes, right? First let me say I love this Author...I absolutely LOVED reading "Friend Zoned" and it's sequel. The plot and writing in those stories were both original, fun and captivating. The reader is invested and attached to the characters in very little time. That didn't happen in this story. At least, not for me.

I hate giving negative or even mediocre reviews. But this story just cannot compel me to write anything very positive :(

Lily Flynn is a 22 yr. old loner who enjoys her seclusion. She still lives at home with her parents and older sister, and spends 95% of her time reading in her spacious library of a bedroom of her family's huge sixteen bedroom mansion. She hasn't had real friends in a very long time and doesn't trust easily...so friendships are hard for her to establish (if she even cared to try). But I thought her character refreshing and real. She has many vulnerabilities...but she's also a very strong young woman.

Then Lily is kidnapped right from her own home, and she soon discovers her kidnappers are her protectors. There has been a murder attempt on her life and she's taken to a safe-house by "Nox"...one of a team of mercenaries. She's held at a safe-house until the threat to her life is over.

Nox and his team of mercenaries hire themselves out for various jobs. Nox is tough, hardened and extremely aggressive. He's stoic, remote and cold. And little by little, without meaning to.. Lily begins to break down his wall's that he's erected....no real surprise there.

This story is not a complex plot and is really nothing new or original in its concept. It's very simply....simple. There are no twists or turns or surprises. It's completely predictable. Basically the entire story takes place at the safe-house. Two people who don't care for each other much (at first) are stuck together in one place, unable to leave. The rest you can pretty much figure out for yourself.

The story is told in first person from each main characters' POV....mostly from Lily. (it would've been refreshing to hear more from Nox). I adored Nox's Dominant Alpha bad boy Male self. Absolutely delicious and I thought Lily to be the perfect "other half" for him. Only someone as innocent and sweet as her could bring him to his knees. The dialogue between all the characters is sweet with enough humor to keep the predictable plot somewhat interesting.

Let it be known that I love this authors' previous books. I just feel this story was not par for the course. A far, far cry from Friend-Zoned

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Who IS he, you ask? Who IS Mr. Meus? Any relation to the famed Dr. Seuss?

No relation through blood; just connection through rhyme: a marvel that travels through space and through time.

That Marvel of Rhyme, carried by Mother Goose, and so beautifully spun by the great Dr. Seuss.

Then the Dr. passed on, and his rhymes stayed behind. But who would the Marvel of Rhyme come to find?

There was a young man; as "Meus" he was known. And it seemed he was destined also to own...

That Marvel of Rhyme, that so very few see. Their names even rhymed--it was just meant to be.

Like you, Meus grew up with the Grinch and the Cat. And he felt in himself, "Hey, I can do that."

One day he was reading that Green Eggs and Ham, and then he just knew, "I'm a Rhymer, I am."

So he dug up some paper and pulled out a pen, and just started writing and then... then... well, then...

Born was the Mr. - one tale then another. So go tell your mother, your father, your brother,

Your uncle, your grandma, your neighbour, your sister, about this new Meus that they're calling Mr.

His rhymes have that marvel of old Mother Goose and that master of rhyme, the great Dr. Seuss.

That marvel of Meus: it's awe and then some. So stay tuned for the wonder... there's more yet to come.

"If you like Dr. Seuss, you'll love Mr. Meus."

delightful!

The opening "acknowledgement" page carefully notes that Mr. Meus is NOT the long-lost nephew of Dr. Seuss, but I can imagine both The Good Doctor and Mr. Meus getting together and having long, animated conversations (I can see them at some table, high atop some towering construction being carried on the back of some furry, 6 footed pale-blue beast).

"The Blankful Heart" is a delightful, Seuss-inspired tale about what is really necessary-- which is actually not nearly as much as you might think. Certainly not nearly as much stuff as the inhabitants of Babbleland think, who always "made sure to buy many things... the men many cars / the women big rings."

One Babblelander in particular, big-bellied Billy Babble, had lots of stuff-- two of everything and twice as much as everyone else! Mind, he doesn't SHARE any of his stuff, nor does he find any of it even useful, but in Babbleland, of cousre, the point is just to have great piles of stuff.

Not suprisingly, though, something is missing. What exactly ol' Billy can't quite say, so he goes to a series of doctors, takes all the right medications and nothing quite fills that strange emptiness (I found myself thinking of the good doctor's line, "Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store..."). That is, until he takes a trip to Bibbleville, where the inhabitants seem to be perfectly happy and well adjusted playing games with only bits of string. Billy is confounded by all of this until a small Bibblevillian befriends him and points out what is REALLY important.

One thing well documented is that "The Blankful Heart" doens't have any illustrations other than a simple, stylized heart that slowly tumbles down the page: the intention of the author is to encourage the reader to paint the visuals in the mind. Having grown up on a steady diet of Dr. Seuss, Mercer Meyer, Jan and Stan Bearnstein and the likes, I found it quite easy to begin picturing Billy Babble as he went to get "pilled and billed" by his doctors, jumped into his babble-bubble car and motored off to Bibbleville. In fact, so MANY different variations on the scenery, the characters and the various objects-- he has a buzzoo, twice as big as any you've ever seen, for instance-- it was hard to keep my imagination limited to just one or two.

I think this paint-the-pictures-in-your-own-mind is a good idea and encourages the reader to slow down, think a bit, not be so knee-jerk reflexive. Really, what DOES a buzzoo look like? what does it do? what do you do with it? (if anything-- though I have a suspicion you might be able to eat it). in todays fast-paced, do-17-things-at-once culture, I feel that encouraging children to sit and think on their own about things that are not 100% spelled out for them is a Good Thing. Take the time to sit down and dream up what the story looks like and how the characters function (try to come up with even a dozen games you can play with a bit of string-- let alone the 300 that Bibbleland kids have invented!)

It's a delightful, simple story that Mr. Meus has given us, with a simple-yet-important moral, especially in today's GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE! culture. in choosing to emulate Ted Geisel, Mr. Meus has not only given the story a bouncy rhythm and metre, but also immediately tuned the reader in to one of the most iconic and important voices in the history of children's literature, immediately drawing us in from the very first few words. Well done, good sir!
