Champlain's Dream, by David Hackett Fischer

Winner of the Pritzker Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing

In this sweeping, enthralling biography, acclaimed historian David Hackett Fischer brings to life the remarkable Samuel de Champlain—soldier, spy, master mariner, explorer, cartographer, artist, and Father of New France.

Born on France's Atlantic coast, Champlain grew to manhood in a country riven by religious warfare. The historical record is unclear on whether Champlain was baptized Protestant or Catholic, but he fought in France's religious wars for the man who would become Henri IV, one of France's greatest kings, and like Henri, he was religiously tolerant in an age of murderous sectarianism. Champlain was also a brilliant navigator. He went to sea as a boy and over time acquired the skills that allowed him to make twenty-seven Atlantic crossings without losing a ship.

But we remember Champlain mainly as a great explorer. On foot and by ship and canoe, he traveled through what are now six Canadian provinces and five American states. Over more than thirty years he founded, colonized, and administered French settlements in North America. Sailing frequently between France and Canada, he maneuvered through court intrigue in Paris and negotiated among more than a dozen Indian nations in North America to establish New France. Champlain had early support from Henri IV and later Louis XIII, but the Queen Regent Marie de Medici and Cardinal Richelieu opposed his efforts. Despite much resistance and many defeats, Champlain, by his astonishing dedication and stamina, finally established France's New World colony. He tried constantly to maintain peace among Indian nations that were sometimes at war with one another, but when he had to, he took up arms and forcefully imposed a new balance of power, proving himself a formidable strategist and warrior.

Throughout his three decades in North America, Champlain remained committed to a remarkable vision, a Grand Design for France's colony. He encouraged intermarriage among the French colonists and the natives, and he insisted on tolerance for Protestants. He was a visionary leader, especially when compared to his English and Spanish contemporaries—a man who dreamed of humanity and peace in a world of cruelty and violence.

This superb biography, the first in decades, is as dramatic and exciting as the life it portrays. Deeply researched, it is illustrated throughout with many contemporary images and maps, including several drawn by Champlain himself.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Fischer, Pulitzer Prize–winner for Washington's Crossing, has produced the definitive biography of Samuel de Champlain (1567–1635): spy, explorer, courtier, soldier, sailor, ethnologist, mapmaker, and founder and governor of New France (today's Quebec), which he founded in 1608. This extraordinary and flawed individual was a man of war who dreamed of establishing a peaceful nation in the New World. Fischer once again displays a staggering and wide research, lightly worn, including no fewer than 16 fascinating appendixes covering everything from the Indian Nations in Champlain's World, 1603–35 to Champlain's preferred firearm. The bibliography is equally impressive, and the same should be said of Fischer's literary skills and approach. He does not have a thesis, or a theory, or an ideology, but instead answers questions (Who was this man? What did he do? Why should we care?) to weave together his epic story. With 2008 the 400th anniversary of the foundation of New France, the time is ripe for this outstanding work. 16 pages of color photos; b&w photos, maps. (Oct.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Regarding the history of European settlement in North America, David Hackett Fischer has been around the block. It is no surprise, then, that Champlain's Dream speaks with authority on the relatively unknown biography of one of the period's leading figures. Fischer's solid, comprehensive—and ultimately sympathetic—portrayal of the enigmatic Champlain rekindles the consequences of European settlement in the Americas. Throughout, the author maintains a professional interest in separating fact from fiction: "Because he is a rigorous historian, not a historical novelist, [Fischer] is always scrupulous about drawing a firm line between facts and inferences," claims the reviewer for the New York Times Book Review. With the exception of the Washington Post's critic, who cites poor "skills as a narrative historian," critics agree that Fischer's effort is both important and admirable.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec four centuries ago, and theinterveningyears haveseenhis historical treatmentswing from hagiography to iconoclasm.Noting the extremes, Fischer seeks out a realistic Champlain in his formative influences, personal qualities, and purposes in establishing New France. Not surprisingly from the author of the outstanding Washington’s Crossing (2004), Fischer marvelously achieves his aim. Framing Champlain’s maturation within France’s religious civil wars, Fischer argues that his experience with atrocity and fanaticism caused Champlain to aspireto a more equitable and humane pacification of conflict, the dream Fischer’s title references. In practical terms, Champlain’s military and maritime education in the 1590s schooled him in the conduct of arms and ships vital to the explorations on which he subsequently embarked, while his possible status as an illegitimate son of King Henri IV might have been a factor in the royal support he obtained for his ventures.NarratingChamplain’s activities in North America is where Fischer excels, both in his chronicle of events and his analysis of Champlain’s leadership, political and commercial backing, and diplomacy with the native peoples. Fischer’s comprehensive, incisive portrayal will enthrall the Age of Discovery audience. --Gilbert Taylor

Another Pulitzer?
By Dr. Philip J. Kinsler
This book is a massive, sweeping undertaking in the best tradition of historical writing, pulling together events, personalities, the philosophical zeitgeist of the time, and the cultural impact viewed from our times. David Hackett-Fisher portrays Champlain as unique among the explorers/colonists of North America in taking an open, humanistic, cooperative and curious view of the Native American tribes he interacted with. He sought alliances for mutual benefit, not conquest. He viewed the 'Indians' as fully his equal in competence, intelligence, ability to adapt to the environment, and personal power and dignity. He kept his word, honored his agreements, and was respected in Indian oral traditions hundreds of years later.

Hackett-Fisher gives a glimpse of what might have developed had Champlain explored further south, and planted a colony at NY prior to the Dutch--might this continent have developed in a very different way?

In following Champlain's life, Hackett-Fisher writes an easy to read and compelling narrative. It is a pleasure to read. The book is a lavish work. There are illustrations and maps galore. The places mentioned in the text are actually present on the maps, a pet peeve of mine. There are illustrations of historical artifacts such as an Iroquois war club, and fascinating asides, such as this club was often used for a final strike to put a dying warrior out of their misery--thus the invention of the phrase coup-de-grace.

This story of the founder of New France portrays a man far ahead of his times, and with attitudes towards 'the other' that we would still do well to emulate. Champlain's life and Hackett Fisher's book illustrate history as compelling moral story with lessons for our time. A teriffic book.

One other less happy thought from this writer's point of view. It seems that now, when one writes a serious work of history, one writes the book, and then has to write almost an entire additional book defending why you wrote the original book the way you did. The 'historiography' section of this book is virtually 250 pages in length itself, with analysis of preceding historical viewpoints, bows to their contributions etc. For this non-professional historian reader, this was too much. Whatever happened to writing one's book, giving a note to sources, and publishing journal articles about how you arrived at your interpretations? This reader found the Appendixes, from A through N, unnecessarily detailed and tedious.

Very informative, thorough, and extensive references. I found it impressive that the author gave the differing points of view from others and clearly stated his own with supporting references. 4th grade biography report
By Deb B.
My 9 year old son loved this book. This was one of three he read in the series. Walt Disney, Neil Armstrong and Albert Einstein. Each were great reads and he loved the information he got from the books. I enjoyed him reasing it out loud to me the second time he read it. My sons 4th grade class was assigned a biography book to read and report on. There was plenty of information as far as where they were born, how they accomplished what they each did and some sideline info on each of them that was interesting. However, the size of the words to a page and the difficulty would be more appropriate for 3rd grade not 4th.

A Must Read for Anyone Before Spine Surgery
By K. Joines
In full disclosure, I am Sandra's daughter and one of her caretakers during her surgery recovery. Becasue I was there and participating in many of the activities she describes, I believe I am able to provide an unbiased account of the book and it's relevance to you.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST-READ FOR ANYONE WHO IS GOING TO HAVE SPINE SURGERY. While Sandra's surgeon and care team did their jobs in providing her (and us) with instructions and expectations as they see them from their clinical view, I know of no other guide out there that provides fundamental guidelines and solutions to ALL aspects of the recovery process.

My mom and dad worked hard and smart before her surgery to anticipate what she would need at home for the best recovery possible, and that pre-planning was key - not only in ensuring that future surprises were limited, but also in reducing the stress associated with the unknown. Not only does this book provide practical advise and solutions to the things that most patients already think of (managing stairs, getting in and out of cars), it also provides insight and approaches to things you may not of thought of (grabbing things, having key items handy but not in the way, effectively dressing and undressing), as well as things that are maybe uncomfortable to think of and talk about (showering help, using the bathroom, staying ultra-clean, unanticipated side effects of medications).

It is so hard to anticipate what you are going to experience and what is going to challenge you - both physically and mentally - following spine surgery. And I believe that lack of information can increase stress and fear, which in turn can decrease the effectiveness of the healing process. As a caretaker, knowing that Sandra had thought through so many things was extremely helpful to me; I was better able to help her when I had clear guidelines. And the things she was able to (and wanted to) do herself still amaze me.

Please read this book before your surgery. And have your designated caretakers read it. And have your on-call part-time only-if-really-needed caretakers read this book. Sandra's humor and positive attitude make a "How To" book a pleasure to read.

Helping Make Your Recovery as Painfree as Possible.
By Barry Watson
Back pain! Those two words are about as thrilling as hearing the words "Tooth ache!" It's was good then the author, Sandra, tackles this important topic. I especially like how she doesn't solely base the book on her own surgery, but rather focuses on how to set up your home to help your recover process be less painful and as stress free as possible.

What she does is cover many practical things that need to be attended to to make your recovery as speedy as it can be. Somethings you may be aware of, many you might not know until you are faced with it. By being informed and proactive about your recovery enables you to be far better prepared.

As an example, I like how each chapter finishes with a section called "Tips & Action Items." It's here that the author gives you a wealth of ideas that you would be in the dark on, had it been for her insight. Simple tips include; buying slip on shoes, installing shower bars, and purchasing several reachers. I also like her use of the term "BLT", and no it's not bacon, lettuce and tomato.

Recovering from back pain is challenging enough. The last thing you need is further stress when you get home. That's why this highly practical book will be of great help to those recovering from back surgery.

Recover From Spine-Surgery Pain-Free With This Fabulous Book!
By Scott B. Allan
Although I have never personally suffered from back/spine pain, my mother has for many years and so I gifted this book to her. I remember as a kid growing up and the terrible pain she went through for years because of the after effects of the surgery, loss of sleep at night, and the powerful mediation she needed just to walk.

This book is such a valuable gift to people who are going through this as well as their families. It is written by the author Sandra Jones who shares her own experiences with spoon surgery. What I love most about this book is that it doesn’t read like a medical journal with a lot of difficult terminology. Rather it is very practical, down-to earth advice that the author shares based on how she was able to function much better at home.

Each chapter focuses on a certain task in the house that is normally challenging for someone who has had back/spine surgery, considering the loss of mobility that can come with the operation. I really found the action list at the end of each chapter to sum it up so that someone can easily refer to the list when they are trying out these action tasks.

For example, getting home from the hospital and using a plastic bag to get out of the car; installing handrails at the entrance of the house and rolling in and out of bed. Although these actions come naturally for most of us, someone going through surgery recovery would struggle immensely with just basic movements.

I loved the BLT strategy as well [no bending, lifting, or twisting] that Sandra was told by her surgeon to avoid doing when she got home.
The other chapters are all GOLD and give invaluable advice such as setting up your kitchen, getting ready for bed, preparing the bathroom and bathroom business, the shower, and perhaps one of the most difficult of daily and routine tasks, getting dressed.

The bottom line:
If you or someone you know is going through this, the best thing you can do to help is to gift them this book. They will have valuable advice to follow from someone that has been through it and it will save so much needless pain and frustration. I only wish my mother had this book thirty years ago!

Removing Blinders
By Ernestina Parziale
For some time people have been aware that we live in a government-by-corporation world. Mr Chomsky lays out the nuts and bolts of how this works. For someone who cares, this is a good starting point at getting an education on the subject. Vilified by conservatives and liberals alike who feed at the corporate troughs, Mr Chomsky sees things as they are. I would recommend any of his books.

By Mark Wells
I am not a typical reader of Chomsky - my views would be described as 'conservative'. But in my studies over the past 10 years I have tried to read the 'other side'. My conclusion is that our oppressors have benefited from (and probably planned) the great divide between liberals and conservatives. Conservatives trust the "markets" while Liberals trust the government. The truth is that the government and the market are two heads of the same beast when crony capitalism takes over and the oligarchy rules. That is why there was no appreciable difference from Bush to Clinton to Bush to Obama. Both sides need to realize that the oligarchy benefits from this division, and we need to seek common ground to dismantle the power structures that are slowly squeezing the liberties out of our society.

A Crystal Age, by William Hudson

The book presents an almost utopian society where man lives in peace and harmony. The young protagonist is transported into the future where he has difficulty in coming to grips with reality. A narrative that captures the imagination and strikes a crucial balance between the author's desires of a dystopian future society and reality.

An irritating Rip Van Winkle romance
By Karl Janssen
A Crystal Age, published in 1887, is a utopian science fiction novel by English author W. H. Hudson. I hesitate to use those adjectives in describing the book, however, because it barely qualifies as either. The book reads like a tepid, watered-down ripoff of William Morris’s novel News from Nowhere, and Hudson even acknowledges the similarities in his preface to the 1906 edition. It turns out, however, that Hudson’s book preceded Morris’s by three years, so the former deserves credit for that. Wikipedia states that A Crystal Age “has been called a ‘significant S-F milestone.’” I don’t know who would call it that, however, because it is vastly inferior to News from Nowhere and just about any other utopian or dystopian novel I’ve ever read. Regardless of what influence it may have had on the genre, A Crystal Age is merely a baby step towards futurism and suffers from being too deeply rooted in the histrionic romantic literature of the past.

The story is narrated by a man named Smith. While out hiking the English countryside, he stumbles off a cliff and is knocked unconscious. When he comes to, he is covered in earth and entwined in tree roots. After digging himself out he discovers that the world he has awoken to is very different from the one he fell down in. At first, Smith doesn’t comprehend what has happened, but the reader recognizes that, much like the fairy tale of Rip Van Winkle, Smith has been asleep for a long time indeed. The sylvan landscape in which he now finds himself is largely uninhabited, but he soon encounters a party strolling in the woods, engaged in an apparent funeral procession. These beautifully dressed strangers gaze in horror at Smith’s antiquated and dirt-covered garments, and they are equally disturbed by his attempts at conversation. Although they speak the English language, they have no comprehension of words like “England,” “city,” or “money,” and do not recognize the names of any of a long list of historical personages. Though they suspect Smith may be insane, they recognize a traveler in need and invite him to accompany them back to their home. This fish-out-of-water scenario is humorous at first, but it becomes annoying as it goes on for half the book. The others’ take so much offense at everything Smith says, they come across as a bunch of annoying, puritanical pricks.

Smith is taken to a mansion which seems to function as an independent city state. One patriarchal couple governs over this domain, and the mother is worshipped as a goddess. Unlike Morris’s novel, which contemplates in great detail the social conditions of a future world, this is about the extent of Hudson’s utopian thought. The world depicted has a vaguely Pre-Raphaelite vibe, and only serves as background to a plot about Smith chasing after a 15-year-old girl. To be fair, the narrator is only 21, but his pursuit of the fair Yoletta borders on stalking. Despite all his waxing poetic about the nature of love, it’s clear his attraction towards her is purely physical. Much to his chagrin, her world does not comprehend romantic love, only a sort of universal brotherhood and affection, which makes his task more difficult. He soon realizes that to win the girl he must win over the mother, so he sets about kissing up to the matriarch.

Smith doesn’t even seem to realize that he’s been transported to the future. Only in the final two chapters is there any degree of philosophical reflection on mankind’s present or future existence. I enjoy 19th-century literature and utopian novels of all stripes. Even by the standards of its day, however, A Crystal Age is merely a dull, pedestrian love story, and 21st-century readers will learn little from it. News from Nowhere is no masterpiece either, but it’s a lot better than this.

This is worth a second read - probably more.....
By A. G. Plumb
The pastoral nature of this novel is such a disguise for it ends with the toughest, grittiest and most challenging ending I have ever read (stronger than Kafka's 'The Trial', or Christopher Priest's 'The Separation'). As a human being facing what we all face this ending is truly awful.
But what is Hudson telling us in this novel? Is it a Victorian approach to telling things that are otherwise inexpressible - that affection is not enough? That real love with all its manifestations must be honoured, because without it there is only death?
Here I find a challenge to psychoanalysis and all the techniques of psychology: 'I only discovered, what others have discovered before me, that the practice of introspection has a corrosive effect on the mind, which only serves to aggravate the malady it is intended to cure.' (If only I could stop introspection ......!) ) [page 279 Dutton edition of 1917]
But here the common man, Smith, plunged into this affectionate pastoral society, bemoans what he has just learned - that the young woman he loves can never love him as he wishes - 'I wish that I had never made that fatal discovery, that I might have continued still hoping and dreaming, and wearing out my heart with striving after the impossible, since any fate would have been preferable to the blank desolation which now confronted me.' [page 303-304 of the same edition]
I wonder what woman of Hudson's acquaintance he had to put aside with such enormous regret that he expressed these words!
Search this book out. Absorb its gentle fantasy and hold tight for a rough ending.

The .45-70 Springfield, by Joe Poyer, Craig Riesch

This 5th revised and expanded edition provides a part-by-part review of all models of the Springfield .45-70 Trapdoor rifle, carbine and cadet rifle. Three new chapters have been added to this edition: Officer's Model Rifles, Experimental (26-inch) Carbine, and Fencing Muskets.

Every part from buttplate to front sight of every model is discussed in terms of dimensions, use, markings, finish and changes to that part by serial number range. A new serial number list is included with serial number ranges listed by production years. This new list includes serial numbers not previously included by other authors.

This book makes it possible for the collector to determine whether or not a particular rifle, carbine or cadet rifle is original as manufactured. The collector must keep in mind that not only was the .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor used by the Army, but also by the Navy, Marines, National Guard and various state militias from 1873 to well into the 20th Century. The trapdoor was still being issued as late as World War I to militia units for guard duty.

During this more than forty-year period of service, the trapdoor went through several model changes and even more frequent parts upgrades. So a rifle manufactured in 1879 may have undergone as many as twenty parts changes by 1889, all of which are considered valid, original manufacturing changes. The problem the collector, museum director, gunsmith, author and shooter faces is determining which changes were made officially by the Ordnance Department while in service and which were made by surplus dealers, resellers and previous non-military owners.

"The .45-70 Springfield" provides answers to all these questions and more. With this book in hand, it is possible to assess every part and using the serial number stamped on the receiver, determine first in what year the arm was manufactured, then on a part-by-part basis, decide whether or not each part is the correct and original part for that arm. If some parts are found to have been manufactured later, then the book will tell you whether or not those parts were installed by military armorers according to regulation.

Why is this important? First, the .45-70 Springfield is a tangible piece of the history of our nation. And as such, it deserves to be correct. Secondly, the .45-70 Springfield's value depends in large part on how original it is. Parts that are incorrect can be replaced, returning the arm to both its historical and economic value. The book also provides a historical overview of the .45-70's development and use during the latter part of the 19th Century and into the 20th. Also included are assembly/disassembly instructions, cleaning and maintenance, glossary and bibliography.

No detail too small...thank goodness
By F. Mullen
Ever find a nice looking old rifle in a shop or at a gun show but were worried about one or two non-standard features? Is it genuine, or is it a fake? Should you buy it and risk paying good money for a "parts gun," or leave it and risk losing a valuable addition to your collection?

This little volume can help you decide. It has detailed descriptions of all the standard-configuration .45-70 "trapdoor" Springfields--all the parts, all the markings. But it also documents non-standard configurations that are nonetheless genuine and the history that explains why they were made that way. Why do so many 1884 rifles have 1873 breech blocks? Is it possible that that 1888 rifle came equipped with a two-piece trigger guard rather than the standard one piece? This is the sort of minutia that makes our friends and family roll their eyes but that enthralls collectors of antique firearms, and it is just the sort of detail the authors provide.

Small and light enough to take with you, this book should be standard "hunting equipment" for collectors on the prowl.

Complete and Thorough
By John M. Lane
Using line drawings, charts and well-researched texts, Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch bring us a comprehensive, part-by-part reference book dedicated to an important U.S. military firearm. I have a couple of .45 Springfields and I found both of them covered in detail in this book.

This isn't light reading, but if you've got a .45 Springfield you're trying to identify, or restore, this book is worth its weight in gold.
It's thoroughly-researched, well written and a must-have if you're shooting, collecting, restoring or trying to identify one of these historic rifles.

North Cape Publications is famous for its FOR COLLECTORS ONLY series and this book follows that format faithfully and successfully. I gave it five stars and keep right next to M.D. Waite's and B.D. Ernst's TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD.

A good book on the 1873 "Trapdoor" Springfield.
By Bill Hensler
I needed a general reference book for Trapdoors and this book fit the bill. It's fairly inexpensive. Some of the much more expensive books cover the Trapdoors in great detail and at huge expensive, some up to $150 for an out-of-print book.

I am looking to purchase a Trapdoor. This book explains the markings, manufacture of the weapons, history of the various parts of the weapon, inspectors of the weapons, gives production numbers, give explanations of why part "A" would be found on rifle "b". and is an extremely helpful to anybody who wants to buy a trapdoor. What's nice is the book is easy to carry to a gun show and you don't have to pull out a smart phone and flail around on the web trying to find out information. Just for the speed it's worth half of the price of the book.

I dinged a star because there was not a heck of a lot on the history of the weapon, no better than Wikipedia. It seemed to be a little thin on the deployment history. Still, the .45-70 gave good service to the US Army and States Militias for a time and did what was required of it.

This is a fair book and will give the reader exactly what they need for good knowledge of the Trapdoor.

The Wide Lens: What Successful Innovators See That Others Miss, by Ron Adner

How can great companies do everything right—identify real customer needs, deliver excellent innovations, beat their competitors to market—and still fail?

The truth is that many companies fail because they focus too intensely on their own innovations, while neglecting the ecosystems on which their success depends. In our increasingly interdependent world, winning requires more than just delivering on your own promises. It means ensuring that a host of partners—some visible, some hidden—deliver on their promises, too.

Ron Adner draws on over a decade of research and field testing to reveal the hidden structure of success, from Michelin’s failed run-flat tires to Apple’s path to market dominance. The Wide Lens offers a powerful new set of frameworks and tools that will multiply your odds of innovation success.

The most useful business book I've ever read
By J Kaye
Adner's work is both richly insightful and easy to grasp. The cases are vivid and tools applicable to a wide audience - general managers, product managers, founders, business school students, C-suite executives and everyone in between. I found the three-part structure of the book to be extremely useful and thought it enhanced my level of learning by clearly and systematically building upon the earlier concepts presented - developing a very valuable toolbox of relevant examples and frameworks along the way.

The first section introduces the inherent challenge of innovating within innovation ecosystems (which exist in every industry once you learn how to spot them) and makes explicitly clear the hazard that co-innovation and adoption chain risks pose to even the most well-funded and highly skilled organizations (the Michelin run-flat debacle and Nokia's epic 3G failure are especially illuminating). He proves the point that in today's business environment, listening to customers and flawless execution are not enough - these are necessary but in no way sufficient. In the second section, Adner presents a bold assessment of how, when, and where to compete in order to maximize one's likelihood of success - including a brilliant discussion of how to spot when first-mover advantage is a benefit and when it's a curse via the First-Mover Matrix. In the final section, a clear blueprint is presented to teach managers how to think about ecosystem reconfiguration and steps for shaping ecosystems in order to eliminate a firm's innovation blind spots and prevent avoidable failures.

The singing reviews from other A-list business minds like Jim Collins and Clay Christensen are spot on. This book has changed the way I think - I use at least one of Adner's case examples or frameworks on a daily basis. Buy this book, read it, and then keep it on your desk - it will change the way you think about managing innovation and your business.

Must Read!!!
By Amazon Customer
I've started far more business books than I've finished - quite simply, I find them a chore.

Adner's The Wide Lens is the opposite - it is a joy to read. Filled with useful concepts and real world lessons, and written in a clear, compelling manner, Adner makes each chapter interesting by telling the real story of companies that succeeded or failed - and why.

Pros:
Interesting - it's a FUN read. How often can you say that about a business book?
Clear and concise - Adner excels at transferring knowledge efficiently - little wonder that he is a successful teacher
Useful - Adner's description of the interconnected nature of many of today's innovative products and services, and how to avoid the trap of a narrow focus, are great lessons
Great Stories - From digital movies, to inhalable insulin, to run-flat tires and many more, you will find yourself very knowledgable about business successes and failures covering a wide range of products and services

Cons:
This is Adner's first book, I wish there were more!

In short: read this book.

Game-changing strategic frameworks
By Ken Fraser
The strategic frameworks developed in the Wide Lens have changed how I think about the world. I have little doubt that this ecosystem perspective will pervade managerial thinking and business school training for future generations of leaders throughout the world. For now, these ideas offer a distinctive, practical and ground-breaking view on innovation strategy. This work is at the forefront of business thought and Ron Adner is on a climb that will see him join the highest echelon of business strategists, alongside FW Taylor and Michael Porter. This book is a must read for any serious or aspiring executive.
