As author Tamara Lewis explains, this brand new edition of the highly regarded Employment Law Handbook covers ‘the wide range of employment problems in a clear and practical form’.

The aim, she adds, is to identify the relevant legal and evidential issues, thereby providing a self-contained guide to the conduct and procedures pertaining to unfair dismissal and discrimination cases – hence the emphasis throughout on evidence, precedents and checklists.

Note that this particular guide comes from the estimable Legal Action Group, which seeks to redress where possible any form of injustice against the vulnerable. The book therefore centres on advice that would be most useful to low paid workers and their advisers. As the focus is on the claimant, the approach is practical and the language is clear.

Employment law is, of course, a huge subject which over the last decade or so has expanded quite astonishingly, largely as a result of EU influence. So it should come as no surprise that this eleventh edition of well over 900 pages is now twice the size of the first edition although, as the expert author explains, it is impossible to cover the whole of employment law in one volume.

Nonetheless, the effort has been made to include all the changes and new developments in this area of law, including ‘a completely new set of employment tribunal procedural rules.’ The end result is what has been rightly referred to as ‘the definitive text on employment law for the adviser’.

With lay readers as well as practitioners clearly in mind, the organisation of the book to is logical and therefore timesaving. Each chapter starts with a summary of the main points, with extensive cross-referencing throughout. There are over 80 pages of tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments and of European and international legislation. Illiterate, a book of lists and little more

This book is desperately in need of several things. First, the services of a capable editor would have been a good idea. Not only is the use of language clumsy, it reads as though written by someone for whom English is not a native language. Grammatical errors abound, syntax is awkward, and word use peculiar at best. There are sentences where words are obviously missing altogether. According to the author's bio, he is a PA resident and blogger, both of which make this reader shake her head in amazement. No wonder the state of language is so sad in this country.

Now, as for content, on numerous occasions the author warns to find out about safety of certain ingredients, but never once offers readers sources of information about those safety concerns. His odd language use also results in mis-information and mis-categorization of certain ingredients.

The balance of the book is simply lists of oil combinations with peculiar titles like Teen Love. It is not a particularly creative or well done volume, which makes me grateful I did not pay for it. It's not of any real fiscal value. A person truly interested in learning to blend his or her own fragrances would do just as well, if not better, spending five minutes doing some internet research.

I love great smelling fragrances and have spent a lot of money over the years on perfumes and body sprays ... I never entertained the thought of making the product myself, until I read this book. I found Chapter 1, "The Brief History of Perfume", very interesting as well as Chapter 7, "Creating Aromatherapy Perfumes". The author includes easy to follow recipes for many different types of fragrances ... floral scents, fruity scents, and oriental scents. Packed full of great information on the subject of making your own perfumes at home, this book will be a great addition to any "how to" library.

A very good way to give sufficient description on how to get started on perfume making for people who wants to have an idea on how fragrances are made step by step. I have made a couple of fragrances using this book as a guideline and it came out just the way I wanted. It's a simple book but yet a sophisticated work from the author.

About the Author
Cornelis ('Kase') Klein is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He received his BSc and MSc in Geology from McGill University, Canada, and his PhD from Harvard University, also in geology. He has been a member of the Geology faculty at Harvard University, Indiana University, Bloomington and the University of New Mexico: he has taught courses in mineralogy at all these universities. His published books include the Manual of Mineralogy (19th-21st editions, John Wiley and Sons) and the Manual of Mineral Science (22nd-23rd editions, John Wiley and Sons). He has received two awards for excellence in teaching from the University of New Mexico.

Anthony R. Philpotts is Emeritus Professor of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Connecticut, a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts. He received his BSc and MSc in Geology from McGill University, Canada and his PhD from the University of Cambridge. He has taught igneous and metamorphic petrology courses at McGill University and the University of Connecticut for over forty years. His published books include Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Second Edition (2009, Cambridge University Press) and Petrography of Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks (1989, Prentice Hall; 2003, Waveland Press).

This book is fantastic!

I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. I collect rocks and minerals and am interested in geology, but most the textbooks are too technical and too expensive. I wanted to know how minerals form, what their make up is, how they differ from rocks, etc. This book explains that, and is written well. The photos are gorgeous! I'm not a student, but I'm very interested in what the earth is made of. The title of this book grabbed me and has held me interested to read every page.

If you are interested in rocks and minerals, and geological processes, this book is for you.

I studied geology many year ago. Trying to revise things especially about minerals, I was about to buy a mineralogy book....thought of Dana's book but this was a better choice...its not just mineralogy, somewhat generic... and all the images are in color (an extremely rare thing for geology books)....A good book for someone who wants to revice many things by buying just one book! let me put it this way ...this book is mineralogy + igneous and metamorphic petrology with thousands (may be) of images in color.. worth its price

better to spend money on the 2 separate books for minerology and petrology instead

If you are buying this because you are a geology major, ask if your professor will recommend another book. I would recommend buying the right book for petrology and mineralogy separately instead. My university started using it as a compromise, but in the end both my mineralogy and petrology professor did not like this book.

A Must Read for Business Leaders !!!

Career changing book! This is a great read for anyone that manages other employees in call centers and even beyond! In addition to the great coaching principles contained in the book, the authors also teach how to create a winning and safe environment for you and your employees.

I have had the pleasure of working with Sally Cordova and Judy McKee for nearly 15-years and have hired McKee Consulting to train the LAMA Technique and The Positive Coach Approach at various companies including eHarmony.com, Stamps.com, Reunion.com, MyLife.com and most recently Spokeo.com. Each opportunity to work with them drove amazing and tangible results. Outcomes like lowering Employee Turnover, increasing Customer Satisfaction, boosting Sales and Customer Retention! Their approach to training, coaching and their underlying principles has made/saved tens of millions of dollars for the various organizations I have worked for in the past 15-years.

This book is a great start to changing how coaching and training should work in a call center or any environment that is customer facing! I would highly recommend ordering a copy.
